16 outdoors april4 2019 Recreational Crabbing Now Open Along Entire Oregon Coast Clatsop beaches closed to razor clam harvesting The Oregon Department of Ag- riculture (ODA) and the Oregon De- partment of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) announce recreational crabbing is now open for the entire Oregon Coast, free of restrictions. Crab samples taken from the area of Cape Blanco, north of Port Orford, to the California border indicate that levels of the marine biotoxin domoic acid have dropped below the closure limit. Two consecutive tests below the limit are required to open a closed area. When cooking crab, it is always recommended that crab be eviscerated and the guts, or butter, discarded prior to cooking. When whole crab are cooked in liquid, domoic acid may leach into the cooking liquid. It is recommended to discard the cooking liquid, and do not use it in other dishes, such as sauces, broths, soups, roux, etc. The consump- tion of crab viscera is not recommended. ODA and ODFW will continue monitoring marine biotoxins in crab and shellfish to ensure the concentrations re- main below the closure limit. For up-to-date recreational shellfish and crabbing information, call Correction ODA’s shellfish safety information hot- line at (800) 448-2474 before crabbing or clamming or visit the ODA recre- ational shellfish biotoxins closures web- page. For commercial crabbing, ODA and ODFW have lifted the requirement that all crab harvested from Cape Blanco to the California border be eviscerated (gutted). An evisceration requirement will remain in place for all crab harvest- ed from any area outside of Oregon with crab viscera samples for domoic acid of 30 ppm or higher, which includes all crab harvested off California at this time. For commercial crabbing information visit the ODA commercial crab biotoxin information webpage. Vernonia’s Voice mistakenly ran an incorrect ad for Wauna Credit Union in our March 21, 2019 issue on page 14. The published copy advertised a promotion which was only valid during the month of February. Vernonia’s Voice apologizes for any confusion this mistake may have caused and sincerely regrets this error. In other coastal news, ODA and ODFW announced the closure of recre- ational and commercial razor clamming from the Columbia River to Tillamook Head (south of Seaside). Recent shell- fish samples taken from the area indicate levels of the marine biotoxin domoic acid have risen above the closure limits. Recreational and commercial razor clamming is also closed from Cape Blanco to the California border for ele- vated levels of domoic acid toxin. Razor clamming remains open from Tillamook Head to Cape Blanco. Mussel and bay clam harvesting is open along the entire coast. ODA will continue to test for shellfish toxins twice per month, as tides permit. Reopening of an area requires two consecutive tests, at least one week apart, with all results below the limit. For more information call ODA’s shellfish safety information hot- line at (800) 448-2474, the Food Safe- ty Division at (503) 986-4720, or visit https://www.oregon.gov/oda/programs/ foodsafety/shellfish/pages/shellfishclo- sures.aspx.
