schools february7 2019 11 Schools Update: Bestselling Children’s Author Coming to Vernonia to Promote Kindness and Inclusion On March 14, award-winning children’s au- thor and advocate Trudy Ludwig will be presenting at Vernonia Elementary School to give her nationally ac- claimed presentations to students, staff, and parents on the topic of relational aggression (emotional bullying by intentionally manipulating or hurting peer relation- ships) and to help children connect with peers in kind- er, more caring ways. Ludwig’s student assemblies will be broken down in grade clusters (i.e., K- grade 2 and grades 3-5), so that she can address this topic in an age-appropriate manner. After school, she will provide an in-service workshop to staff, followed by an evening parent pre- sentation. On Thursday evening, March 14, parents and community members are invited to attend “Understand- ing Our Kids’ Online & Offline Social World: Friend- ships, Cliques & Power Plays.” The talk will take place from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Vernonia Schools Commons. “We’re excited to have Trudy Ludwig share her books and expertise with our school community about this very important issue,” says Aaron Miller, Vernonia Elementary Principal and Vernonia School District Superintendent. “We want to stay on top of the latest research and learn about new resources and tools to help us continue to provide a safer social-emotional learning environment for our children.” Ludwig has received rave reviews around the country for her passion and compassion in addressing bullying and friendship issues. She has been featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” PBS’s nation- ally syndicated show, “Keeping Kids Healthy,” Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Reading Rainbow, the National Crime Prevention Council’s Circle of Re- spect program, and served as an expert panel member on Sesame Workshop’s video series addressing bully- ing. Her books (My Secret Bully, Just Kidding, Sorry!, Trouble Talk®, Too Perfect, Confessions of a Former Bully, Better Than You, The Invisible Boy, Gifts from the Enemy, and Quiet Please, Owen McPhee!) have re- ceived national praise for helping children cope with, and thrive, in their social world. Ludwig presents at schools and conferences throughout the U.S. to raise awareness of relational aggression among children and what adults can do to help. She also collaborates with leading bullying pre- vention experts and key organizations around the coun- try.
