12 schools january17 2019 VHS Winter Sports Report Wrestling – The Vernonia wrestlers finished a respect- able 8 th out of 17 teams at the Pac Rim Armed Forces Tournament in Seaside on January 11-12. The top fin- isher for the Loggers was Josh Rice who took 2 nd place at 152 pounds after winning three of four matches. Rice’s record for the season is now 19-5. Other top finishers for the Loggers included Brandon DePue who took 3 rd place in the 106 bracket, winning four of five matches, all by fall, and now has a 15-5 record on the season; Wyatt Jones finished 3 rd at 120, winning four of five matches and has a record of 13-3; Josh Sholes took 3 rd place at 126, winning five of six matches – his record on the season is 22-5; and Austin Sicard finished 4 th at 138, winning four of six matches, three by fall, and now has a record of 17-8 for the season. The Vernonia girl wrestlers took part in the Bob Beisell Girls Tournament on January 12. Top fin- ishers for the Vernonia girls were Charity Coleman, who finished 3 rd at 125, and Hailey Reynolds, who took 3 rd place at 130, winning three of four matches, all by fall. smothering defence led by sopho- more Jayden Hartman, strong re- bounding at both ends of the court, and a balanced offensive attack, led by senior point guard Joyce Everett, junior Jordan Walters who scored 14 points, and freshman Brooklyn Wal- ters who scored 12; Hartman added 10 points for the winners. With the win Vernonia moved into a tie for 1 st place in the North- west League with a 6-1 record in league play, and a 8-6 record overall. The Lady Loggers had previ- ously racked up three straight league wins, with recent victories over Co- lumbia Christian 54-7 on January 8, and 53-12 over Gaston on January 12. Vernonia will travel to face Knappa on January 21 and then The Logger wrestlers were headed to the prestigious Oregon Classic on January 17-20. The Clas- sic is a duel meet, with round robin style competitions. The Loggers are seeded 4 th overall in the 20 team 2A- 1A Division, and are the top seed in Group 4 where they will face off against Coquille, Jefferson, North Lake, and Central Linn. Last year the Loggers were the surprise of the tournament, entering the event un- seeded but finishing 2 nd to division powerhouse Culver. Girls Basketball – The Vernonia Lady Loggers won their big show- down against 1 st place Portland Christian 41-21, in a dominating team performance on January 15. Grace Costley designed a landscape project for her family’s backyard after spending time at the Eshraghi Nursery. Grace learned about how to graft plants and about beneficial insects. She said she worked closely with a number of Hispanic employees and tried to learn Tyler Wolf some conversational Span- ish during her project. Grace said she is interested in a ca- reer in horticulture, possibly something to do with bugs. Zach Larke spent time at Big Cove Ranch in Central Oregon near Maupin where he learned about cattle ranching and helped install a drainage line to help wa- ter the cattle. His mentor was Gary Nannini, a close family friend who works on the ranch. He said after spending time on the ranch he is not interested in it as a career, but may pursue it as a hobby. He said he plans to become an electrician and maybe pursue a degree in electrical engineering. some personal goals for herself. Tyler Wolf spent 100 hours volunteering at the Oregon Zoo this past summer as part of the Zoo Teen program. Tyler worked with the public talking about the animals’ lives, playing educational games, and teaching people interesting and unusual facts. Tyler says he is inter- ested in pursuing a career as a zoo veterinarian. Jenna Watson worked with a professional colorist for comic books to learn about a career in the art field, particularly in comics. Jenna first drew the characters for the story Robin Hood, using only a basic descrip- tion of their role in the story and said she enjoyed the process of developing the characters and adding her own details. She then drew a few comic panels for a short story she wrote herself, taking time to develop the characters over several draft drawings. Jenna said she really enjoyed her project and she plans to explore art as a career. Savannah Norman used her project as a way to teach her- self about acrylic painting. Her mentor was Vernonia art teacher Kaitlyn Carr–Ki- protich. Savannah started out learning new techniques and about textures, and how to apply those techniques to create fun artwork. Then she focused on conceptual ideas by visiting the Portland Art Museum and then creating response painting – art that match the style or ideas in a painting she viewed. She then created several of her own paintings. Savannah says she has taken art class- es before but has never done any painting. She explained that Denmark is a very flat (the highest point is just 400 feet above sea level) and small country surrounded by sea on all sides – she said you are never more than 32 miles from the coast anywhere in the country. She talked about the capital city of Copenhagen which has a beautiful New Harbor development that has been renovated. She also talked about the Great Belt, a 12 mile long bridge which links the east and west of the country. The Denmark flag is the oldest continually used national flag in the world, first used in 1219.
