community news november15 2018 P.E.O. Wreath Sale We’re not yet done with Thanksgiving, but it’s time to start thinking about Christmas plans and prepare for another special holiday season. This time of year marks the beginning of P.E.O.’s th 27 season of providing Christmas wreaths that fund our local scholarships. Since that time, we have raised over $50,000 that has helped local graduating seniors and upper level college students, fund their educations. We want to make sure that people in and around Vernonia get these gorgeous wreaths. For many of us, this is the first holiday decoration to appear, a sure-fire way to get the Christmas Spirit going. If you have ordered wreaths in the past, you should expect a phone call soon asking you if you would like to reorder this year. This pre-sale order plan helps us make sure to have an ample supply. Call Tobie Finzel, (503) 705-2173, or Mary Tolonen, (503) 429-7214, to place your order now. Wreaths will be available right before Thanks- giving. There will also be wreaths for sale at the Christmas Bazaar while supplies last. This year we will also have a small supply on Saturday, November 17, at R&S Market from 10 to 4. We can take additional orders at that time if we run out or you need a different size. Our supplier’s prices increased for the first time in several years and thus we must do the same. The price is $22 for a 20-22 inch diameter wreath (10 inch ring size). We also offer a smaller wreath (approximately 10 to 12 inches across) for $16 that is suitable for cemetery place- ment. Wreaths may be picked up at the bazaar or can be delivered to you. Prepayment is appreciated. See you at the Christmas Bazaar December 1 st and 2 nd in the Vernonia Schools Commons or at R&S Market on November 17. 5 Council Amends Zoning Code continued from front page homes may not be the kind of people we want in our community. Holly Vaughn also asked for the City to better communicate when important decisions are going to be made. Council discussed delaying a deci- sion and allowing one week for more pub- lic comment, but in the end decided against that, citing the need to move forward with city business, and voted to adopt the reso- lution. The Resolution takes effect 30 days from adoption. On the Shelves By Shannon Romtvedt As an official ballot drop site, the Library is always busy the week prior to an election. Some community members walk through the doors to drop ballots and immediately walk back out. Several come in to ask a question about the ballot (does it need a stamp, what to do if you don’t receive a ballot, who picks up the ballots). Some come in to look around, check out materials, or get a new library membership. Thank you to everyone who walked through our doors and voted in this November election. I was particularly struck by how kind people were, helping others find the ballot box or thanking people for voting. It was a great week to work at the Library and to be part of this community. Thank you to Beth Kintz at the Vernonia Schools and her student work crew. We had five high school students come to the Library over the summer for cleanup projects and to help kids film Lego stories. Students will be coming back this November for an outdoor grounds cleanup. Volunteering at the Library is a great way to earn community service hours and make a difference in the community. We appreciate all the student help we have had this year! The Library is working with the Vernonia Elementary School to offer an after school book group, “Timber Pages.” The group meets twice a month, the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday, 3:05 - 4 pm, in Ms. Taylor’s room, 141. The book group is led by Library Assistant, Jamie Adams, and is specifically for grades 3 - 5. If your child is interested in joining the book group and did not already receive a sign-up form from school, please contact the Library. The plan will be to have comfy chairs and a small table for people to sit and read or work on a laptop, apart from the main traffic area of the library. Thank you to Library Board Chair, Haley Ayres, for designing and painting a mural in our soon to be reading nook. What a gift to our Library! My interest was obviously piqued and I had to learn more. Written by Susan Orlean, bestselling author of The Orchid Thief and Rin Tin Tin, I decided to put everything else aside on my shelf and check out this book. It was worth it. The Library Book by Susan Orlean centers around the 1986 Los Angeles Public Library fire that destroyed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. The book gives a history of the Los Angeles Public Library with all its challenges and eccentric leaders. It also tells the story of the fire and gives a sense of what the library is like to walk into today. As someone who loves libraries, I thoroughly appreciated this book. As a reader, I also recommend it to anyone who loves good storytelling centering on real events. I promise to return it so you can borrow it from the Library!
