schools november15 2018 Schools Update: Vernonia Education Foundation By Superintendent Aaron Miller The Vernonia Education Foundation (VEF) was initially set up to provide fundraising support for the new Vernonia Schools proj- ect, and then moved its fundraising efforts into paying off the debt from the new campus once it was complet- ed in 2012. With the passing of our most recent General Obligation Bond in 2017, the $5 million in debt incurred by the District during construction was paid off, and the main focus ar- eas for the VEF have been reevalu- ated. With no debt to repay, the VEF will now focus on three new main areas of support for its fundrais- ing efforts. These include the Sports Initiative, Scholarship Opportunities, and Classroom Support within the Vernonia School District (VSD). The VEF Board is very excited to direct its attention to more student-centered initiatives. The following is a brief de- scription of these focus areas. We hope that one of these areas will be especially near and dear to your heart, and you will find it an accept- able place to provide a donation that will truly impact the students of Ver- nonia. The Sports Initiative is a VEF fund that has been operating for several years, right along with the debt reduction campaign. Donations in this area from many past alumni, paid for the construction of Alumni Field, the new varsity softball field on the Vernonia Schools campus. Donations in this area from Evelyn and Randy Holce paid for construc- tion of Holce Field, our new varsity baseball field. Student scholarships are another area in which the VEF will be focusing fundraising efforts. The Vernonia Alumni Scholarship is one such scholarship that is available for students graduating from Vernonia High School. Other scholarship ef- forts are being discussed and de- veloped, to provide more financial opportunities for our Vernonia High School graduates. Classroom Support is the fi- nal area of focus for VEF fundraising efforts. Providing small grants for a classroom teacher’s special project, money for taking a field trip, or fund- ing for needed supplies or equipment are some of the opportunities this fund will provide. These are just some of the items that the Vernonia Education Foundation is working on. If you are interested in being a part of the group, and helping make a difference for Vernonia Schools, call (503) 429- 5891 to find out when the next meet- ing will be held. Boosters Buzz The next Boosters meeting will be Tuesday, December 11 at the Schools Library, 6:00 pm. We would like to open the doors to new people joining boosters and all we have to offer. Hope to see you there! Vernonia School Board Meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of each month. The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for November 15 (third Thursday) at 6:00 pm in the Schools Library. e rm an DM D Vernonia Dental D h . r C r h p o is t M er . h S c eu 622 Bridge Street Vernonia, OR 97064 phone (503) 429-0880 -- fax (503) 429-0881 11 2018 VHS Fall Sports Awards VOLLEYBALL Northwest League Awards 1st Team: Joyce Everett, Setter 1st Team: Jordan Walters, Outside Hitter Honorable Mention: Abigail Coleman, Libero Team Awards MVP: Jordan Walters Most Inspirational: Joyce Everett Most Improved: Brooklynn Walters CROSS COUNTRY Northwest League Awards 1st Team: Jakob Handegard 1st Team: Sadie Gump 2nd Team: Jenna Handegard Team Awards MVP Boys: Jake Handegard MVP Girls: Sadie Gump Most Improved Boys: Dinu Cojocaru Most Improved Girls: Grace Costley Outstanding Leadership: Sean Coffey FOOTBALL Northwest League Awards Offensive Team 1st Team: Joshua Rice, RB 2nd Team: James Watson, OL Defensive Team 1st Team: Joshua Rice, LB 2nd Team: James Watson, DL 2nd Team: Kale Sullivan, DB Honorable Mention: Gunnar Harral, DB Honorable Mention: Calvin Clapshaw, LB Honorable Mention: Hepner Forster, DL Special Teams 1st Team: Joshua Rice, Kick Return 1st Team: Gunnar Harral, Punter Team Awards MVP: Joshua Rice Most Inspirational: Kale Sullivan Best Lineman: James Watson Above: Brandy Everett Left: Sadie Gump Below: Josh Rice
