VHS Fall Sports Report
Volleyball – After once again quali-
fying for the State Playoffs, the Lady
Loggers almost took the next step, but
failed to advance after falling in a five
game match to #7 seed Coquille on Oc-
tober 27.
The Lady Loggers finished
their season in 2 nd place in the North-
west League, defeating both Faith Bible
and Gaston in the League Playoffs 3-0,
before falling to Portland Christian 3-0
in the finals.
The Lady Loggers entered
the State Playoffs as the #10 seed and
traveled to Coquille where they won
the first two games 26-24 and 25-16
and looked like they would earn their
first trip to the State Championships in
Redmond under head coach Teresa Wil-
liams. Instead, Coquille battled back,
winning a nail-biting game three 27-25
and then taking the fourth game 25-16.
Coquille ended the Lady Loggers hopes
in the fifth and final game, winning 15-
8.
The Loggers finished their sea-
son with a 22-7 record.
Cross Country – The Logger runners
finished their strong season at the Dis-
trict Meet on October 25, with most of
coach John Roady’s runners posting
Personal Records (PR).
The Logger boys finished a
strong 4 th in the District as a team.
Senior Jake Handegard again led the
Logger boys, finishing 9 th with a time
of 17:57. Jacob Pasko finished 23 rd in
19:24. Byron Cook took 29 th in 19:51
and Sean Coffey finished 32 nd in 20:19.
Abraham Kpirikai was the final scor-
ing runner for Vernonia finishing 40 th in
21:32, and was followed by Nick Cost-
ley in 41 st and Dinu Cejocan in 42 nd .
For the girls, Sadie Gump end-
ed an outstanding freshman year of run-
ning, finishing 19 th in a time of 21:20,
and was followed closely by sophomore
Jenna Handegard in 21 st place in 21:53.
Grace Costley finished 39 th in 24:34,
Ines De Saintignon was 63 rd in 28:12
and Emma Hahn took 67 th in 29:39.
The girls team finished 6 th as a team in a
tough District that included several 3A
programs.
No Vernonia runners qualified
for the State Meet this season.
Football – The Loggers ended their
season strong, earning their second win
of the season with a 60-12 thrashing of
Gaston on October 26.
Head coach Reed Watson’s
team ended a disappointing season with
a 2-6 record overall and a 2-4 record in
Northwest League play. With just a few
graduating seniors and a large class of
juniors who gained valuable experience
and playing time this season, the Log-
gers look like they should field a com-
petitive team next season.

to maintain the wooden benches in
downtown Vernonia. Claude re-
cently repaired and refinished all the
benches, paying for the materials
himself. This kind of volunteerism
is what makes Vernonia such a great
community.
Where Do You Read The Voice?
Jamie McKinney-Fousek was recently in India for 12 days and
stopped at the Taj Mahal. She had planned to take a picture
of herself in front of the Taj with a copy of Vernonia’s Voice
but it was confiscated by security right before she entered the
grounds. Luckily they held it for her and she was able to get it
back when she left, so she took a picture from the Taj Nature
Park with the Taj Mahal in the background.
