on October 4, Gaston on October 9,
and Portland Christian on October 13,
and will compete in the North Marion
Tournament on October 6. They face
Knappa in their final home game this
season on October 11. League Playoffs
will be held on October 18 and the
District Playoffs, with a spot in the
State Playoffs on the line, will be held
October 20.
Football – The Loggers had mixed re-
sults in their two most recent contests,
rolling over an overmatched Portland
Christian side on September 21 by the
score of 58-6 for their first win of the
season, before falling to a strong Knap-
pa team, 62-30 at home on September
28. Knappa is currently ranked #3 in
2A.
Head coach Reed Watson re-
mains confident that his team can still
improve and make a run at a State Play-
off birth with three games remaining,
although they still have to face first
place Neah-Kah-Nie.
“Our kids have shown a lot of
heart and they keep playing hard, even
when they get behind,” said Watson.
“We scored the most points against
Knappa of any 2A team this season and
all of our losses have been to teams that
have been winning a lot. It’s been frus-
trating but I think we’re playing better
than our record reflects.”
Watson noted that both the of-
fensive and defensive lines have strug-
gled against larger sized players. He
said the coaching staff made some mis-
takes on defensive calls that led to sev-
eral big plays for Knappa, and mistakes
and penalties have also hurt the team.
Watson said running back and
kick returner Josh Rice is having an
outstanding season so far; Rice ran for
338 yards against Portland Christian
and had over 200 yards rushing and 170
yards on kick returns against Knappa,
and now has over 1,000 total yards
rushing on the season.
The Loggers travel to Warren-
ton on October 5, have a bye week and
then face Neah-Kah-Nie on October
19 for Homecoming. They close their
regular season on October 26 at Gaston.

Schools Update: Spencer
Health and Wellness Clinic
By Superintendent Aaron Miller
Have a student with a health
need? The Spencer Health and Wellness
(SHAW) Clinic can meet that need.
Students in the Vernonia School
District are fortunate to have a school-
based health center located right in the
main foyer of the Vernonia Schools
building. SHAW has been operating in
the Vernonia School District since mov-
ing into the new building in the fall of
2012, and serves all students, grades
K-12, including those utilizing the Or-
egon Health Plan or other forms of in-
surance.
Spencer Health and Wellness is
open Mondays and Wednesdays from
8:30 am - 1:00 pm. You can call to make
an appointment at (503) 429-1399.
Having a local clinic for health
care allows parents the convenience of
not driving out of town for health ser-
vices, and also has a positive impact on a
student’s school attendance.
Not having to drive out of town
can save some students a full day of
school if their appointment is in the mid-
dle of the day. At SHAW they can leave
class, walk down the hall, go to their
appointment, and be right back in class
with another walk down the hall.
SHAW can not only help with
appointments for illnesses, but also can
help with required vaccinations, sports
physicals, and regular checkups. They
are a full-service medical clinic.
Mental health services are
also available here on campus through
Columbia Community Mental Health
(CCMH).
If you have any questions re-
garding how to access the Spencer
Health and Wellness Clinic, how to ac-
cess the Oregon Health Plan, CCMH,
or any other Vernonia School District
business, please contact Superintendent
Miller at (503) 429-5891.
Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second
Thursday of each month. The next School Board Meeting is
scheduled for October 11 at 6:00 pm at the Mist School.
Don‛t worry.
We‛ll go to Meyer‛s Auto Body.
