Sou’wester Lodge on the Long Beach Peninsula continued from page 10
Long Beach is home to the World
Kite Museum and the Washington
State International Kite Festival in
August each year.
This corner of Southwest
Washington is known for its sea-
food, with fishing, crabbing, oys-
tering, and clamming popular pur-
suits. Numerous fishing charters
operate out of the Port of Ilwaco
and the surrounding areas.
This area also offers sev-
eral State Park options to visit, in-
cluding Cape Disappointment and
Fort Columbia, and Fort Stevens
State Park on the Oregon side of the
river, where you can learn about the

If you’re looking for good food
and drinks, the Long Beach Penin-
sula has options, but with Astoria
right across the bridge, we headed
there for meals. We visited the
Buoy Beer Company, a microbrew
at the 8th Street Pier with full food
menu and outstanding river views.
We had breakfast at the Blue
Scorcher Bakery & Café (1493
Duane Street, right next door to the
Fort George Brewery), an employ-
ee owned, organic restaurant, that
uses locally sourced ingredients to
create delicious and healthy foods.
After breakfast we strolled along
the Astoria Riverwalk and enjoyed
the fabulous fall weather, the sunshine
and sea breezes, and the fantastic views.
With so much to see and do, and
such a short drive away, the Long Beach
Peninsula, the Sou’wester Lodge, and
Astoria make a great overnight or week-
end get-away and really are worth the
trip!
