House and Senate Pass Career
and Technical Education Bill
Bonamici amendment included
Congresswoman Suzanne Bon-
amici (D-OR) spoke on the floor of the
United States House of Representatives,
advocating in favor of the Strengthen-
ing Career and Technical Education for
the 21 st Century Act.
“In Oregon, CTE (Career and
Technical Education) classes like Bea-
verton’s Aloha High School’s Auto
Tech program and Newberg High
School’s CAD Lab engage more stu-
dents, boost graduation rates, and give
students the opportunity to learn real
world skills,” said Congresswoman Su-
zanne Bonamici. “Federal CTE funding
provides critical equipment that schools
need to make these hands-on classes
meaningful experiences for students in
Oregon and across the country.”
The legislation, which has now
passed in both the House and Senate,
includes an amendment that Bonamici
crafted with Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-
NY) to encourage the integration of art
and design skills into CTE STEM pro-
grams.
“I am proud that this bill in-
cludes the amendment I worked on with
Rep. Elise Stefanik, my Co-Chair of the
STEAM Caucus,” Bonamici said. “Our
provision will help make sure that the
next generation of students are creative
and innovative by fully engaging and
educating both halves of their brains
through art and design.”
The President is expected to
sign the bill.
Free Heart Screening for Students
Providence Heart and Vascular
Institute is offering a free heart screen
for students ages 12-18 on Wednesday,
September 19, from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm
at the Vernonia Schools. The goal of
this program is to screen young people
for serious cardiovascular abnormali-
ties.
Chances are a child’s heart is
healthy and yet a small percentage of
young people have hidden heart defects
that put their lives at risk, especially
during physical exertion. Young people
with undiagnosed heart defects, espe-
cially athletes, are susceptible to sudden
cardiac arrest. Often there are no ad-
vance signs or symptoms and most rou-
tine physical exams will not pick up the
defects. An electrocardiogram (EKG/
ECG) usually is necessary to uncover
signs of heart irregularities, something
normally not done in “well-child”
checks or even some sports physicals.
Medical personnel will provide
the participants with a summary of the
screening results and if needed will rec-
ommend additional evaluation through
follow-up with the primary care physi-
cian or a specialist.
If you would like to have your
child screened please complete the par-
ticipation form included in the school’s
registration packet or pick one up from
the school’s main office.
