Columbia Humane Society Selected for Cat Pawsitive Program
Innovative training program
helps increase cat adoptions
The Columbia Humane Society
(CHS), located in St. Helens, has been
selected by The Jackson Galaxy Project
(JGP), a Signature Program of Greater-
Good.org. CHS will participate in the
Summer 2018 Semester of Cat Pawsi-
tive, a life-saving initiative that intro-
duces positive-reinforcement training to
cats in shelters and rescues. Supported
by the Petco Foundation and Halo® pet
food, this innovative training program
for cats aims to increase feline adoption
rates and maintain cat “mojo.”

Greg Gustafson. A team of rescued
Border Collies will entertain and
educate through demonstrations of
football, baseball, skits, and Frisbee

Cactus Jack’s Traveling Show

Cabin in Vernonia. Fun melodrama
performed by the Stage Troupers,
traveling childrens theater group.

Jackson Galaxy (star of the tele-
vision show My Cat from Hell on Ani-
mal Planet, and founder of JGP) devel-
oped Cat Pawsitive with a team of feline
behavior experts. Highlights of the pro-
gram include:
• Maintaining cat “adoptability” and
feline social skills by enriching cats’
day-to-day lives
• Increasing adoptions
• Decreasing length of stay
• Engaging and empowering volunteers
and staff
• Showing potential adopters that cats
are cool and can even be trained!
“The genesis of Cat Pawsi-
tive stemmed from the simple desire to
duplicate the ‘AHA!’ moment I had in
the early stages of my life with cats as
a shelter worker,” said Jackson Galaxy.
“By utilizing the training concepts that
were, to that point, only used for the
dogs in our care, not only were the cats
stimulated, motivated, and energized,
but so was I. That, along with the most
important result, lives being saved, was
the win-win I envisioned passing on to
as many cats and shelters and rescues
as I possibly could. So today I am filled
with an indescribable mix of joy and an-
ticipation as we enter the Summer 2018
session of The Jackson Galaxy Project’s
Cat Pawsitive program.”
The Cat Pawsitive program is
designed to keep adoptable cats men-
tally and physically active in a shelter
or rescue environment. The focus is on
fun, positive reinforcement-based train-
ing sessions that go beyond playtime-
as-usual to help cats maintain their mojo
and connect more quickly with potential
adopters, teaching high fives and head
bumps, to “sit” and “come when called.”
Caregivers at Cat Pawsitive participat-
ing organizations engage with cats in
a brand new way to really help cats to
“click” with adopters.
“The staff and our team of vol-
unteers look forward to what this pro-
gram will bring to CHS,” said CHS Ex-
ecutive Director Lisa Beggio. “Our cat
program for years has been under devel-
oped and under funded. CHS is looking
to try to make a difference in the many
lives of as many cats as possible while
they are in our care at the shelter.”

lights of the program on The Jackson
Galaxy Project Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram pages.
Columbia Humane Society
(CHS) is located in Columbia County,
Oregon. Established in 1985 it remains
a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit organi-
zation, dedicated to assisting the com-
munity in the successful re-homing and
training of adoptable animals. The shel-
ter takes in owner surrendered domestic
dogs and cats. Along with accepting
owner surrenders, CHS is a destination
shelter for pets that would otherwise be
euthanized, depending on space and fi-
nancial means. CHS’s budget relies on
donations from volunteers, the public,
small grants, and fund-raising events.
Run What ‘Ya Brung Car
Show Returns for Jamboree

It’s almost time to rev up Jam-
boree’s “RUN WHAT ‘YA BRUNG &
RAT ROD REVIVAL” for the second
straight year and it’s a benefit for Spen-
cer Park as always.
Before we motor up, a spe-
cial burnout to this year’s sponsors,

I would like to introduce every-
one to my new staff members Christine
and Mike Mihalisko of Vernonia to help
this show get revved up! We have some
new events this year and are working
on a few others: “Kids Airbrush Sta-
tion” is a hands-on airbrush art on car
designs; a “Hot Wheels Elimination
Drags Event”; possible “Scavenger
Hunt”; a community display of vin-
tage tractors by local Terry Fultz and
others; display of the early evening’s
racing lawn tractors; Soapbox Derby
display; and the “350 Small Block Tear-
down & Rebuild” returns with a $250
prize for the fastest time, sponsored by
Louis Lardy’s Mechanic Shop. We’re
also looking for a few good mom’s out
there that would like to assist with the
airbrush station. Fun stuff!
