Vernonia City News...
At the July 2, 2018 City Council Meet-
ing:
New Officer Sworn In – The Council
Chambers were full of family and friends
as Vernonia’s newest police officer, Ab-
bie Hanson, was sworn into office. Han-
son’s mother, Anna Hanson, pinned Of-
ficer Hanson’s badge.
Police Chief Mike Con-
ner later told the Coun-
cil that Officer Hanson
has spent several years
with the St. Helens Po-
lice Department as a
reserve officer and also
worked with the Co-
lumbia County Depart-
ment of Corrections.
Officer Hanson will
work as a School Re-
source Officer for the
Vernonia School Dis-
trict as well as for the
City of Vernonia. Conner said Officer
Hanson is scheduled to attend Police
training academy starting in August or
September.
Mayor Recognizes Volunteers – Mayor
Mario Leonetti took a moment to rec-
ognize several volunteers, including
Rick and Linda Hobart who were in at-
tendance at the meeting. The Hobarts,
along with the Del Allen family, worked
to clean up the area around the Welcome
to Vernonia sign at the south end of town.
They also helped with a planting, along
with Rachel Organ, around the Fallen
Officer Memorial in front of the Police
Department.
Topics From The Floor – Richard Stein,
a member of the Vernonia Parks Com-
mittee, told the Council a new hand built
climbing structure, gifted to the City by
Stein, has been installed
at Anderson Park. Stein
said he has received a
donation of more mate-
rials from West Oregon
Electric and he will be
building another simi-
lar structure. He also
told the Council he is
seeking other donations
for Parks projects from
other area businesses,
including Camp 18.

Bleachers Workshop
Rescheduled – Coun-
cil picked two dates for the possible re-
schedule of a workshop with the Save
the Grandstands Committee. The two
possible dates are July 10 or July 18.
The workshop was scheduled to discuss
details of the agreement between the
City and the Committee for the repair
and operation of the Grandstands.
Council Approves Art in the Park De-
signs – Council approved a recommen-
dation for two designs created by Ver-
nonia Schools art students that will be
used to decorate trash cans in a Vernonia
Vernonia Police Blotter
Park. The designs are part of a project
called “Art in the Parks” and is a col-
laboration between the City of Vernonia
and the Vernonia School District.
Council Tables Discussion on Chang-
ing Name of Airport Park – Council ta-
bled a discussion on a recommendation
from the Parks Committee to change the
name of the Airport Park Campground.
Suggested changes from the Parks Com-
mittee included the names Timber Park
Campground, Riverside Park Camp-
ground, and Nehalem River Camp-
ground.

Mayor Appoints McNair to Cemetery
Committee – Based on a recommen-
dation from the Cemetery Committee,
Mayor Mario Leonetti appointed Rebec-
ca McNair to the Cemetery Committee.

City Administrator Report – City
Administrator Josette Mitchell told the
Council that the City of Vernonia was
not selected for an Oregon Department
of Parks and Recreation Local Govern-
ment Grant which the City had applied
for to develop Spencer Park.
Mitchell told Council there has
been interest from contractors in bidding
on the Senior Center/Food Bank Project.
The City will be accepting bids until
July 31, 2018.
Mitchell told the Council that
Public Works employee Tyler Dougherty
has accepted a position with the City of
Cornelius. Dougherty’s last day will be
July 6. Mitchell said the City has posted
the job opening for Utility Worker I and
will accept applications until July 30,
2018.
