Cruiz Wayne Barklow
Cruiz Wayne Barklow
was born to Chuck and Denetta
Barklow of Vernonia on May 6 at
5:40 pm at Providence St. Vincent
Hospital in Portland. Cruiz ar-
rived five weeks early, weighing 5
lbs 6 oz and measured 18 1 / 2 inch-
es long. Grandparents are Wayne
and Sondra Wood, and René and
Nena Sears, all of Vernonia. Cruiz
joins siblings Charity 20, Court-
ney 18, Cutter 15, Jada 12, Tren-
ton 9, and Caylee 7.

John “Lawrence” Johnston
John “Lawrence” John-
ston, 87, a longtime resident of
the Birkenfeld community, died
Tuesday morning, June 12, 2018
at the Veterans Medical Center in
Vancouver, Washington.
A Celebration of Service
was held on Monday, June 18,
2018 at 1:00 pm at the Vesper Em-
manuel Church, 74091 Highway
202 in Birkenfeld, Oregon, with
Steve Weller, officiating. Con-
cluding Rites and Interment with
a Flag Honor Presentation under
the direction of the Army-Aircorp
followed at the Fishhawk Cem-
etery in Birkenfeld, Oregon.
Family and friends were
invited to attend a reception im-
mediately following the cemetery
rites, held at the Mist-Birkenfeld
Fire Department, 12525 Highway
202 in Mist, Oregon.
John Lawrence Johnston
was born May 19, 1931 in Ves-
per, Oregon, the son of the late
Everett Johnston and Annie (Nor-
dstrom) Johnston. He was raised
and received his education in
the Birkenfeld community, hav-
ing been a graduate of the Jewell
High School Class of 1949.
He was a Veteran of the
Korean conflict, having joined the
United States Army in June 1948.
Lawrence served until he received
his honorable discharge in Sep-
tember 1951.
Lawrence was united in
marriage to Dawn Lousingnont
shortly after being discharged.
Following their marriage they
resided in the Birkenfeld commu-
nity, where he had resided since.
They later divorced.
On September 16, 1989,
he was united in marriage to
Virginia L. Ardeel in Reno, Ne-
vada. They celebrated their 28 th
wedding anniversary this past
September. Following their mar-
riage they made their home in the
Birkenfeld community.
He had worked as a
logger, farmer, horse shoer, and
horse trainer. Lawrence had
worked for the Allied Logging
Company in Birkenfeld and later
as a self-employed gypo logger.
He also enjoyed farming, having
raised and harvested cattle and
hay. Lawrence worked as a
horse trainer, having owned and
operated Johnston Arena. He was
still braking horses at the age of
eighty. He retired in 2011.
Lawrence was a mem-
ber of the Cascade Team Penning
Association, the Vernonia Ridge
Riders, and the National Foun-
dation Quarter Horse Associa-
tion. He hosted the Annual John-
ston Trail Ride and Play Day for
over thirty years.
Among his special inter-
ests he enjoyed hunting, restoring
old cars, working with his horses,
as well as caring for his many
dogs.
Lawrence was preceded
in death by his parents Everett and
Annie Johnston; his sister Clara
Laury; and his granddaughter
Brandy Johnston.
Survivors include his wife
Virginia Johnston of the family
home in Birkenfeld; his daughter
and son-in-law Wendy and Tom
Rush of Benton City, Washington;
his three sons and daughters-in-
law, Calvin and Amanda Johnston
of Vancouver, Washington, Scott
and Xiaowei Johnston of Fair-
banks Alaska, and Dean and Jes-
sie Mae Johnston of Birkenfeld;
and his stepson John Hergert of
Montrose, Colorado.
Also surviving are his
seven grandchildren and their
spouses, J.W. and Nicole Brooks
of Goldendale, Washington, Jer-
rid Johnston of St. Helens, Calie
Johnston of St. Helens, Casey
Johnston of Salem, Joel and Ja-
mie Johnston of Birkenfeld, and
Jalina and Charlie Rohls of La-
Grande, Oregon; his seven great-
grandchildren, Josie Brooks, Au-
drey Brooks, Soren Dotson, Ma-
son Rohls, Matty Rohls, Jayden
and Payton Johnston; and several
nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that
remembrances may be contribu-
tions to the Paralyzed Veterans
of America, 7 Mill Brook Road,
Wilton, NH 03086, in his memo-
ry.

Superintendent Report – Superintendent Aaron Miller
reported that the District’s enrollment was 538 students at
the end of the year.
Miller said three student interns have been select-
ed and interviews were being held for the remaining three
positions. Six students, two with each entity, will work
with the Vernonia School District (maintenence/grounds/
custodial), Upper Nehalem Watershed Council (field and
nursery technicians), and Stub Stewart State Park (Ranger
assistants).
Miller announced three new teachers have been
offered positions with the District: Paula Dorry and Te-
resa Gore as elementary teachers, and Rebecca Peabody
for high school and middle school art.
Miller said he and Principal Underwood took part
in interviews for the new School Resource Officer posi-
tion, which will be shared with the City of Vernonia. A
candidate has been identified as the top choice and is go-
ing through background checks.
Miller said his next Community Chat is sched-
uled for Wednesday, June 27 at 12:00 pm at Blue House
Café.
Board Approves New Hires – The Board voted to ap-
prove three new hires recommended by Superintendent
Miller: Paula Dorry and Teresa Gore as elementary teach-
ers, and Rebecca Peabody for high school and middle
school art.
Board Approves Contracts – The Board approved a
contract with Supervisory Employees for 2018-2021.
The contract includes: Business Manager, Administrative
Assistant, Fiscal Assistant, Special Education Compli-
ance Officer, Maintenance Supervisor, and Food Service
Director.
The Board also approved a contract with Superin-
tendent Aaron Miller through June 30, 2021. The contract
calls for a salary of $99,244 for the year 2018-19 and will
increase in subsequent years based on COLA awarded to
licensed staff through the Vernonia Education Association
contract.
Board Approved Policy Updates – The Board approved
several policy updates.
Board approves Out of State Travel for Next Year –
The Board approved out of state travel for the AVID team
to attend training in Seattle on July 10-12. They also ap-
proved travel for the 8 th grade Close Up trip to Washing-
ton D.C. and the Senior Trip to California in spring 2019.
Board Approves Bond Expenditures – The Board ap-
proved a request from Superintendent Miller to approve
expenditures above $150,000. Miller said he expects the
track/football field project and the four-classroom addi-
tion, both of which have an estimated cost of $1.8 million
each, will have expenditures above the $150,000 limit.
Miller asked for authorization to ensure that projects stay
on schedule and are not interrupted while waiting for fi-
nancial approval. The Board asked to be informed if there
were any change orders in the con-
struction.
