6 in other words/community april19 2018 On the Shelves By Shannon Romtvedt The “new” Library Building was dedicated to the community in October 1999. The previous building (now home to the Blue House Café), flooded in 1996. The brand new building was a welcome change, with a fresh open space and lots of room for books and patrons. Our building is still a welcoming space, appreciated by many in the community. As it reaches close to 20 years old, it’s time for updates and maintenance to keep it in good shape. One major project coming up is carpet installation. New carpet will be installed the first week of May. Since moving materials and installation takes several days, the Library will be closed Monday, April 30 - Saturday, May 5. So please check out A LOT of materials before the move! That will help us out. During the week of installation, the Book Drop will also be closed. No fines will accrue that week, so don’t worry about late fees. Please call the Library prior to the closure if you have any concerns. Ballots for the Oregon Primary Election will be mailed out at the end of April. Election Day is Tuesday, May 15. Ballots need to be turned in to a drop site by 8 pm May 15 to count. Please keep in mind that the Library is an official ballot drop site but will be closed the first week of May. Thank you in advance to all of the volunteers and staff that will help with our move. If interested in volunteering for this project, please contact the Library (503) 429-1818. call or visit the library (503) 429-1818 or email shannonr@vernonia-or.gov. Columbia County Reads Willy Vlautin Columbia County libraries have selected the books of award- winning Scappoose author Willy Vlautin as the focus of Columbia County Reads 2018. Columbia County Reads is a yearly collaboration between Columbia County libraries to bring reading to the forefront of public discourse. If everyone reads the same book or author at the same time, it is hoped that it will inspire discussions, connections, and a shared perspective among Colum- bia County residents. Participating libraries in- clude Clatskanie Library District, Columbia City Community Library, Rainier City Library, Scappoose Public Library, St. Helens Public Li- brary, and Vernonia Public Library. Each library has a selection of Vlau- tin’s books available for check out. Vlautin will make author appearances at four Columbia County libraries in April: • Scappoose Public Library, Wednesday, April 25, 7 pm • St. Helens Public Library, Thursday, April 26, 7 pm • Vernonia Public Library, Friday, April 27, 7 pm • Clatskanie Library District, Saturday, April 28, 7 pm, at the Clatskanie Cultural Center, 75 S. Nehalem Street, Clatskanie Columbia County Reads participants are encouraged to at- tend a neighboring library’s author event if their local library is not a host library. The St. Helens Public Knitting Group Library Book Club is partnering with Columbia County Reads for their April book theme. Book Club members should read any of Vlau- tin’s books and attend the Thursday, April 26 author appearance in lieu of the regular Book Club meeting. Vlautin was born and raised in Reno, Nevada before he eventually moved to Oregon. As a teenager he started playing guitar and writing songs. A Paul Kelly song, based on Raymond Carver’s short story So Much Water So Close to Home, inspired Vlautin to start writing stories. Vlautin has published five novels. His first book, The Motel Life, was a New York Times Editor’s choice and notable book. It was also made into a major motion picture starring Dakota Fanning. Lean on Pete was published in 2010 and was the winner of the Ken Kesey Award for Fiction, short-listed for the IMPAC award, and was recently made into a major motion picture starring Steve Buscemi and Chloe Sevigny. The film was screened at the 2018 Portland International Film Festival. The Free is Vlautin’s fourth novel and winner of the Oregon People’s Choice Award. Vlautin also founded the band Richmond Fontaine in 1994, which achieved critical acclaim in the United States and across Europe. Vlautin’s new band, The Delines, debuted in 2014 and sold out venues on their first UK and Irish tour. Planned for families with pre- schoolers but older and younger children welcome. Did You Know? The Vernonia Jamboree Committee is beginning the process to select artwork for use on 2018 Vernonia Friendship Jam- boree & Logging Show promotional mate- rials. The art will be used on event t-shirts, as well as printed materials, and on the in- ternet to promote the event. This is a brand new program and the committee hopes it becomes a beloved tradition. Artwork needs to be submitted by Tuesday, May 15, 2018 to be considered. All the received artwork will be on pub- lic display on both the Jamboree/Logging Show, and the Vernonia Hands on Art Face- book pages. The winning artwork will be announced at the Jr. Salmon Auction on May 24, 2018. The Vernonia Hands on Art Board of Directors and Jamboree Commit- tee will select the winner. If you need an application or have any questions, please feel free to contact contest chair, Bill Langmaid, at (971) 998- 3705, or via email at bill@rangelights.com. If you are interested in being involved with either Hands on Art or Jamboree, Bill can direct you to those two groups. Artwork has to be appropriate for a t-shirt that will be worn in public, and the committee will be looking for submis- sions that capture the spirit of the Vernonia Friendship Jamboree & Logging Show. The commercial appeal of the artwork may be a contributing factor in a successful submis- sion. P.E.O. Spring Tea is April 28 According to the calendar, spring is here again, and P.E.O. is planning another tea party. The date is April 28 starting at 1:00 pm at the Cabin in Vernonia (Scout Cabin). There will be a light lunch served - fancy sandwiches, fruit, and irresistible des- serts - and tea, of course, as well as coffee and punch. Entertainment will once again be provided by a theater troupe from Forest Grove. P.E.O. is a very large organization and has been going strong for nearly 150 years, always with the mission of helping women receive higher education. There are 180 chapters in Oregon alone. The Verno- nia Chapter, organized in 1945, is a small cog in that huge wheel, but manages to keep that pledge of assisting women through scholarships. The tea party is a really nice (and FUN) way for the community to help with that effort. Admission to the party is the same as last year: $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for children 12 and under. Tickets are now available in the Video Department at R&S Market. Raffle tickets will soon be avail- able, too, for three large baskets: a pamper- me collection of cosmetics and other toi- letries, a basket of items for the gardener, and a special basket for the younger guest. Tickets may be purchased for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 and may be placed in the recep- tacle for the basket(s) of your choice. Recently, an event was held in Ver- nonia that was well-attended and a smash success: A Father-Daughter dance. Little girls of all ages dressed up in their pretty dresses and spent what must have been a grand time with their dads or grandfathers. So, a message to those girls: here’s your chance to wear those outfits again and bring Mom this time! Actually, there is no “dress code,” come fancy or casual as you wish, but we love to see the pretty and creative hats many wear! Don’t have a hat? You can select one from the “vintage” collection to borrow for the afternoon.
