Schools Update: Bond Projects Underway

Things are hopping in the Ver-
nonia School District with the first
stages of Bond Projects getting started,
developing new academic programs, fin-
ishing up projects for this school year,
and budgeting for the next one.
One of our larger Bond proj-
ects involves a variety of repairs at Mist
Grade School. Titus and Sons Construc-
tion out of Vernonia will start this work
with replacement of the roof and gutters
on both the gym and school buildings.
This work should be finished by the end
of April. Other work at Mist will begin
once students have left for the summer,
as there are many interior renovations
to be completed, including new ceil-
ing tiles, new flooring in the gym and
classrooms, new playground equipment,
security upgrades, as well as new, high-
efficiency lighting.
In town, we continue to work to
develop our scope and sequence for the
new welding shop, as well as the track
and football field. Effective speakers
and audio visual equipment will soon
be a part or our gyms and commons to
make community events more enjoy-
able, while security cameras, efficient
lighting, and storage facilities are being
upgraded as well.
In order to communicate the
details of these projects, and to gather
input from the community, informa-
tional meetings regarding Mist and the
Vernonia Schools projects were held in
early April. The first in Vernonia was
on Wednesday, April 4 in the Vernonia
Schools Commons. The other was held
at Mist Grade School on March 22. An-
other opportunity for input will be pro-
vided at the Thursday, April 12 Board
Meeting to be held at Mist Grade School
starting at 6:00 pm.
In addition to our Bond projects,
we are also working to develop an “At-
Home School Program.” The idea for
this classroom arose from discussions
with local homeschool parents who are
looking for a local program that will
provide critical areas of support for their
students. The program will provide a li-
censed teacher and customized curricu-
lum, including both online and book op-
tions. The district will partner with par-
ents to provide individualized support
from a licensed teacher to help students
attain their academic and personal goals.

On Thursday, May 17 from
6-7:30 pm Vernonia Elementary School
teachers will put on their second annual
Family STEAM (Science-Technology-
Engineering-Art-Math) Night. We will
have a wide variety of hands on activi-
ties for parents and students and hope
you can join us for this fun event!
All in all we have had a great
year here in the Vernonia School Dis-
trict. We hope you can join us soon to
provide input on our Bond projects or to
join us for a night of science and fun.
Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second
Thursday of each month. The next School Board Meeting
is scheduled for April 12 at 6:00 pm at the Mist School.
NOTICE OF BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING
A public meeting of the Budget Committee of the Vernonia School District 47J,
Columbia County, State of Oregon, on the budget for the fiscal year July 1,
2018 to June 30, 2019, will be held at 1000 Missouri Street, Vernonia Oregon.
The meeting will take place on May 3, 2018 at 6:00 PM
The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message. This is a public
meeting where deliberation of the Budget Committee will take place.
An additional, separate meeting of the Budget Committee will be held to take
public comment. Any person may appear at the meeting and discuss
the proposed programs with the Budget Committee.
