CASA for Children Raises $34,000
through Willamette Week’s Give!Guide
Also announces Fred Meyer
as Presenting Sponsor for
27th Annual Auction
For the fourth year in a row,
CASA for Children of Multnomah,
Washington, and Columbia Counties
was selected for inclusion in Willamette
Week’s Give!Guide. Every year Willa-
mette Week chooses 150 of Portland’s
most impactful nonprofits for inclusion
in the campaign. In 2017, over 9,600 lo-
cal donors raised $4.2 million for area
nonprofits.
This year, CASA for Children
was able to raise $34,000 in valuable
revenue, both from steadfast supporters
and over 360 new unique donors.
All proceeds raised from the
event directly impact their ability to
serve more children with a Court Ap-
pointed Special Advocate (CASA) vol-
unteer. A CASA passionately and tire-
lessly works to guide a child through
the trauma of the court system. Oregon
law gives CASAs unusual authority as a
‘party to the case’ so that they are able to
ensure that the system does not ignore a
child’s needs and that the judge has the
information to act in the child’s best in-
terests. A CASA is trained to work with
judges, social workers, teachers, foster
parents, and family members to ensure
that the safety and well-being of the
child is front and center.
The value of a CASA’s advocacy
for a child can have long-lasting effects
on the life of the child. Children in the
court system can move from foster home
to foster home an average of 6.6 times.
With the help of a CASA, children can
experience less trauma by reducing that
number to an average 3.9 moves. A child
is twice as likely to receive the counsel-
ing needed to treat serious issues due to
abuse and neglect with a CASA advo-
cating on their behalf. Children spend an
average of 28 months in the foster care

Thanks in part to this fundraiser,
this year CASA will serve 1,043 of our
community’s most vulnerable children
in foster care with CASAs.

nomah, Washington, and Columbia
Counties is also pleased to announce
Fred Meyer as the presenting sponsor of
their 27th Annual Auction, Singing in the
Rain, to be held on April 6, 2018. This is
the third year Fred Meyer has partnered
with CASA to serve as presenting spon-
sor.
The 27th Annual Auction fea-
tures a silent and live auction, wall of
wine, various raffles, as well as perfor-
mances by local youth. It is among Port-
land’s best loved and hotly anticipated
charity events. This year nearly 550
guests will gather at the Portland Art
Museum for an evening of philanthropy,
gourmet cuisine, and a stellar selection
of fine Oregon wines. Guests represent
a wide range of business and community
leaders. Many are long-time supporters
who use this event as an opportunity to
introduce new individuals to the organi-
zation.
Fred Meyer focuses on spon-
soring events and organizations that
enhance and strengthen the communi-
ties where customers and their Associ-
ates live and work. “We are honored to
receive this incredible support from a
true partner in our communities,” said
Betsy Stark Miller, Executive Director
of CASA for Children. “ Fred Meyer’s
generous donation will allow us to dedi-
cate new resources to recruit, train and
support the CASAs who advocate on be-
half of our community’s most vulnerable
children.”

Documentary on Effects
of Cascadia Earthquake
to be Shown in Clatskanie
“Unprepared” discusses lack
of preparedness in Oregon,
how to plan for disasters
Are you prepared for a giant
earthquake to hit Oregon? To tell the
truth, most of us are not, but should be.
“Megaquakes” have occurred off the
Oregon coast every 300 to 400 years.
Scientists say the last one occurred in
1700, which means another “big one” is
going to happen soon.
To help residents learn more
about this potential disaster, the film
“Unprepared” will be shown Tuesday,
February 6, at 6:00 pm at the Clatskanie
Cultural Center.

film highlights seismic risks in Oregon
and the major disruption the expected
9.0 Cascadia earthquake and resulting
tsunami could cause. The Cascadia
fault is a subduction zone that stretches
620 miles from northern Vancouver
Island to northern California.
After the showing a panel of
local engineers and emergency mangers
will discuss Cascadia and other seismic
risks and how Columbia County and
western Oregon are preparing.
The event, which runs from
6:00 - 9:00 pm, is free and open to all
ages. The Clatskanie Senior Parents
will be selling food and drinks. Door
prizes also will be awarded.
The event is hosted by Columbia
County’s Department of Emergency
Management, the Oregon Section of the
American Society of Civil Engineers,
and the Portland Post of the Society of
American Military Engineers. Partners
include the City of Clatskanie, the
Clatskanie People’s Utility District, the
Clatskanie Cultural Center, and local
engineers and emergency managers.
