Schools Update: Support
for Homeschool Students
By Aaron Miller
District Superintendent
The Vernonia School District
is considering creating a classroom op-
tion that provides support for students
and parents who are homeschooling. A
meeting to discuss potential aspects of
the program, and how it can help serve
students will be held on Wednesday,
February 7 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the
Vernonia Schools Library. If you are
interested in attending please R.S.V.P.
with a call to the District office at (503)
429-5891.
The District is working to de-
velop this classroom option to help
meet the needs of students in Kindergar-
ten through 8 th grade. The idea for this
classroom arose from discussions with
local homeschool parents who are look-
ing for a local program that will provide
critical areas of support. The program
would provide customized curriculum
including both online and book options.
The district would partner with parents
to provide individualized support to
help students attain their academic and
personal goals.
Once enrolled in this new dis-
trict program, families would have ac-
cess to:
• A licensed teacher to meet, support,
and collaborate with students and fami-
lies on campus regarding curriculum,
instruction, and assessment as needed.
• Instructional funds to purchase aca-
demic curriculum and provide educa-
tional enrichment opportunities.
• Providing any state and local assess-
ments necessary to meet State curricu-
lum standards.
• Access to extra-curricular activi-
ties with student peers (e.g. Robotics,
school field trips, and assemblies).
• The option to participate in PE, art,
band, and choir.
In order to make a program
such as this work in Vernonia, it will re-
quire having a minimum number of stu-
dent participants to cover the financial
costs of the elements listed above.
We hope you can join us to talk
about this exciting possibility to further
the options for students residing in the
Vernonia School District.
If you have any questions or
concerns regarding this, or any other
school district happenings, please call
at (503) 429-5891.
