in other words january4 2018 7 Inside Our Films: Blood Father (2016) Mel Gibson returns with a vengence to his action/adven- ture hero role By Jim Bryson Do you remember back when all the celebrity rag mags were talking about how Mel Gibson was losing it and how crazy he looked? I recall the same kind of talk happening when Leonardo Dicaprio was prepping for his role in the Academy Award wining Revenant (2015). Turns out Gibson was just get- ting ready for his role in Blood Father (2016). Blood Father is a heart pound- ing thriller with many emotional twists and turns and is well worth a watch. This is one of many recent releases that you can find at your local Vernonia Pub- lic Library. Blood Father is the latest action/ adventure movie from Mel Gibson after his great fall from grace, exemplified by his 2006 drunk driving arrest. The film is about Link, an ex-con, who finally re- connects with his estranged 17 year old daughter Lydia, (Erin Moriarty). Turns out his child has the same teenage crimi- nal inclinations as her father did and she is now on the run from a murderous Mexican drug cartel. Fortunately Link was something of a big man in the crimi- nal underworld and he is ideally suited to protect his daughter. That is pretty much the story in a nutshell. This story arc is quite familiar, Taken (2008), with Liam Neeson, and 3 Days to Kill (2014) starring Kevin Cost- ner are good examples of this story. Now both of those films, as well as Blood Fa- ther were directed by French directors; perhaps this story arc is partiularly ap- pealing to a French mind. This kind of story appeals to me as well. I have a daughter and I like to think that if she was in trouble like this that I would also do everthing in my power to help her. Link abandons nearly everything to help Lydia. He discards his own security by violating his pa- role and risks reincarceration, he even turns on his only father figure, who was resonsible for his imprisonment. The one thing that he does not give up on is his sobriety. This is an interesting self- reflexive comment on the movie’s star who is also stuggling with a very public alchohol problem. Blood Father (2016) is directed by Jean-Francois Richet, known for As- sault on Precinct 13 (2005) and also for the wonderful pair of French lan- guage films Mesrine Part 1: Killer In- stict (2008) and Mesrine Part 2: Public Enemy #1 (2008). These two films are some of the best true-crime bank rob- bery films that I have ever seen. Blood Father (2016) also has an excellant sup- porting cast, including Diego Luna and William H. Macy, who might be in di- rect competition with Sean Bean for the most on screen deaths filmed. Despite the somewhat predict- able story of a father’s protective ven- genance, this film is very much worth a watch. Mel Gibson is back in fine form as the bearded, brooding Link and Erin Moriarty plays a very convincing des- perate 17 year old.
