Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Editor,
As we approach the end of the
year, I hope you will consider donating
to worthy causes. This can include
local people who could use a helping
hand. Some senior citizens who live
in our community need financial help
accessing nutritionally good food. In
this effort, the Vernonia Senior Citizens
have extended some help to these
people.
The former senior center had to
be demolished due to the flood. While
awaiting a new building, the senior
board came up with a stop gap plan.
Each month, low income seniors who
need some help with meals, and cannot
afford to buy them, are offered ten meal
certificates per month to be used to buy
a free senior meal at Black Iron Grill,
Mariolino’s or Subway. These specific
meals are nutritionally sound and
balanced for seniors. This also gives
seniors a chance to socialize while they
consume their meal. It’s a good plan but
it does cost the Vernonia Senior Citizen
organization $6 per meal. As you can
imagine, this is a costly project. There
is also a home-delivered service offered
to registered seniors through these three
restaurants.
Many people think senior
meals are fully reimbursed by the gov-
ernment. This is not true. Right now the
organization is reimbursed $1.40 per $6
meal. In July 2018, the reimbursement
is projected to decrease to $1.25 per
meal.
On this page is a coupon you
can clip to send with your check to help
support our seniors. If you’d rather, you
can just mail a check to the Vernonia
Senior Citizens, 939 Bridge Street,
Vernonia, OR 97064. Please note
“meals” on the memo line. If you want
a receipt, please indicate that, too. Your
check can act as your receipt, if you
wish.
Fully 100% of this money
helps the Vernonia Senior Citizen
organization to provide meals to our
seniors. Would you consider donating?
It is fully tax-deductible, too. Please join
as we support our seniors (SOS)! Also,
and if you’re 60 years old or more, you
could join the senior members for only
$15 per year. Thank you, in advance,
for your generosity.

Featured Pet
Duce is a neutered male pit bull mix. He
weighs about 60 lbs. and is brindle with
some white. He is a playful, smart, and very
sweet boy. He gets along with most dogs;
same size would be best. Of course a meet
and greet with any other dogs would be
required. He may be too much for a kitty
though. He tries to stay clean in his kennel,
and he would probably do best with some-
one who doesn't leave him alone too much.
In the best interest of the pets in our care
CHS does not have the kennels open to the
public. CHS is committed to making sure that both our pets and our adopt-
ers are successful. If you are interested in adopting a shelter pet, please
don't hesitate to call or email. We like to get to know our adopters before
we have you meet our pets. We feel that if we can talk to our adopters, we
will be able to better assist them in finding that perfect family member.
