Oregon Humanities Discussion About
Aging and Intergenerational Friendship
Aging is a life-
long experience that is
both universal and differ-
ent for everyone. While
most of us agree that
people of different gen-
erations have wisdom
to offer those who are
ahead of or behind them
in life’s journey, barriers
to connection often per-
sist between generations.
Many of these barriers
are rooted in our ideas about age and ag-
ing. Where do these ideas come from,
and how do they impede or encourage
relationships across generational differ-
ences? How do we acknowledge both
the universality of aging and the differ-
ences we experience? How do we create
meaningful connections with others of
different ages and life stages?
This is the focus of “Just a Num-
ber: Aging and Intergenerational Friend-
ship,” a free conversa-
tion with Jennifer Sasser
and Simeon Dreyfuss on
Thursday, October 19,
at 6:30 pm at the Verno-
nia Public Library. This
program is hosted by the
Friends of the Vernonia
Library and sponsored
by Oregon Humanities.
Dreyfuss is a writer
and independent interdis-
ciplinary scholar. He was
on the faculty of Marylhurst University
for twenty-three years. His essays, sto-
ries, poems, scholarly articles, and jour-
nalistic publications have appeared
widely. He is currently coeditor of Is-
sues in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Sasser is an educational geron-
tologist, transdisciplinary scholar, and
community activist. She has worked in
the field of gerontology for more than
half her life, beginning as a nursing as-

Former Vernonia resident Ray
Etheridge has donated a new DVD to
the Vernonia Library called From Or-
egon, Film at 11 – Fun Stories of the
1970s-80s.
Etheridge, a 1970 VHS gradu-
ate, began his 35 year career in televi-
sion as a news cameraman at KATU in
Portland. The DVD is a collection of
ten “feature stories” from Ray’s private
collection, which were originally shot
and edited on 16mm film back in the
days before video cameras.

woman who publishes a newspaper out
of her mobile home, a rowing club on
the Willamette River, a close up look at
Blitz Beer’s “Schludwiller” beer truck,
and a VHS football homecoming from
Etheridge photographed and
edited all of the original material, and
the DVD was produced with his wife,
Migdalia. The contributing reporters
are Pat Wilkins, Bill Boaz, and Jim
Hyde. The DVD is now available at
the Vernonia Library, or available for
download from Amazon.
