We Bakes Opens in Vernonia
counter in the bakery on weekends.
Emily is homeschooling the kids
and is the baker in the family.
“I studied business in
college and knew I always wanted
to have my own business of some
sort,” says Emily. “I’ve always
baked. I had two grandmas who
always baked, so I grew up in their
kitchens, spending time baking.
That’s where I learned it and now
I’m adapting it to a large scale
commercial kitchen.
But most
of our recipes started in our home
kitchen.”
We Bakes has adjusted
their hours for the fall, and are now
open from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm on
Saturdays and Sundays.
They
hope to start baking breads soon
and will continue to try new items,
along with some of the favorites
their regular customers are growing
accustomed to.
“I love to bake different
things all the time,” says Emily, “but
we’ll also have some regular things
every weekend that people can rely on.
I love trying new things and new recipes,
so people will be able to try new things
all the time.”
Emily says they are just now
starting to take orders for special events
or activities like cupcakes for kid’s birth-
day parties. “We’re excited to be able
to do that now,” says Emily. She says
they also expect to have some expanded
hours during the holidays and offer ex-
tra items, like pies and rolls, during that

Emily says they are considering
ways to open the kitchen up for
more community activities, like
kids baking classes or date nights
for couples in the evenings. They
also see themselves getting in-
volved and sponsoring other com-
munity activities and being in-
volved in other ways.
JD and Emily say
the name of their business
reflects their desire to be part
of the Vernonia community.
“We Bakes for us means
that we bake as a family, we
bake as a community,” says
Emily. “It’s about coming
together. We don’t see this
as just our bakery, this is
our family’s bakery and the
community’s bakery. That’s
what we want. We want this
to be here for a long time and
for the community to be part
of it.”
time.
Emily says they hope they can
be an example for others who might
consider moving to Vernonia, invest-
ing in the community, and help make
the downtown more vibrant. “I think
bringing little shops or other things the
community needs is great and hopefully
people will check out what we’re doing,
and think they might do something simi-
lar,” she says.
JD agrees. “I work full time and
we have four kids, so if we can do it, so
can someone else.”
