In Memory of...
Judith Spalding Riley
Judith Spalding Ri-
ley, 76, of Vernonia, Oregon,
passed away Sunday, June 4,
2017 at her residence. She was
born February 18, 1941 in Lake
City, Iowa. She was raised and
received her education in the
Farnhamville, Iowa area, hav-
ing been a graduate of Farn-
hamville High School Class of
1959.
She was united in
marriage to Joseph Edward
“Joe” Riley on October 8, 1966
in Tucson, Arizona. They cel-
ebrated their 50th wedding an-
niversary this past October.
Following their marriage they
made their home in Tucson for
nine months, until moving to El
Paso, Texas. They lived in El
Paso, for 1½ years, until mov-
ing to Livermore, California in
1969. They resided in Liver-
more for four years, until July
of 1973 when they moved to
Oregon, settling in the Vernonia
community, where they have re-
sided since.
Judy worked as a cleri-
cal worker for Lawrence Liver-
more National Laboratory in
Livermore, California for sev-
eral years. After moving to Or-
egon, she worked for Westland
Trailer Company and Texaco in
Portland for several years, until
she retired.
She was raised in the
Episcopal faith. Judy was a
member of the Sweet Adelines
Women’s Chorus Singers, West
Hills Chapter in Portland, Or-
egon, and among her special
interests, she enjoyed music,
reading, and caring for her
American Eskimo dog, “Mis-
sy.”
She was preceded in
death by her parents, Orin F.
Spalding and Margaret Hardy
Spalding.
She is survived by her
husband, Joe Riley of the family
home in Vernonia; two sons and
daughter-in-law, James E. “Jim”
Lemon of Santa Barbara, Cali-
fornia and Joseph P. “Joe” and
Leslie Riley of Bothel, Wash-
ington; brother James Spalding
of Texas; sister and brother-in-
law, Jacqui and Angel Lopez of
Costa Mesa, California; three
grandchildren, Jenna Paige Ri-
ley, Caelan Claire Riley, and
Adam Y. Belbachir; and several
nieces and nephews.
Services have been
held in Bardstown, Kentucky
through the Barlow Funeral
Home.
The family suggests

Robert Charles Schwab
Robert “Bob” Charles
Schwab died June 2, 2017 at
the Willamette Valley Medical
Center from complications fol-
lowing an operation. He was 90
years old.
Robert was born in Ver-
nonia, Oregon on December 19,
1926 to Lee Schwab and Clara
Van Domelen.
Lee, a newspaperman,
moved the family to Dufur, then
Klamath Falls, where Mother
Clara later died at age 29. Lee
and his four children, Melvin,
Bob, Genny, and Lois returned
to Vernonia. Bob graduated
from Vernonia High School in
1944 and immediately joined
the Navy. He served on the de-
stroyer U.S.S. Cowell in the Pa-
cific earning the Asiatic Pacific
Medal, WWII Victory Medal,
Phillipine Liberation Medal,
and a Presidential Unit Cita-
tion. He was extremely proud
of his service in WWII and was
lucky to be on one of the few
ships that came thru the picket
line at Okinawa without serious
damage. After he was honor-
ably discharged, he joined the
Army Air Corp for 2 1/2 years
servicing as specialist at the
Pentagon.
In 1948 he married
Louise Pinto and they had two
sons, Lee and Bobbie. In 1952
he began a profession as a U.S.
Postal carrier. In 1962 after he
and Louise divorced, he trans-
ferred to Portland, Oregon
where he finished 33 years as a
U.S. Postal carrier.
He remarried and had a
daughter named Annie with Ro-
berta Lloyd. After a short time
they divorced and he married
Kay Logerwell in 1965. Af-
ter retirement in 1984, He and
Kay moved to Roswell, New
Mexico where Kay died after
a long illness. Bob returned to
the McMinnville area at that
time and was currently resid-
ing at Vineyard Heights, enjoy-
ing his Redskins football team
and the Mariners baseball team,
amongst a few.
Bob is preceded in
death by his son Bobbie, wife
Kay, brother Melvin, and sis-
ter Genny. He is survived by
his son Lee, daughter Ann,
sister Lois and brother-in-law
Jack Thienes, brother-in-law
Dale Fisher, sister-in-law Jean
Schwab, three grandchildren
and great grand-children, two
stepsons, and many nieces and
nephews with extended fami-
lies. He was a very kind man
who was very loved and en-
joyed by his family spread
throughout Oregon.
Friends and family
were invited to attend his view-
ing at Macy and Son Funeral
Home in McMinnville on Sat-
urday, June 10. At his request,
he was cremated. A Graveside
with Military Honors was held
at Willamette National Cem-
etery in Portland, Oregon on
Tuesday, June 13 at 10:30 am.

Karl A. Baker, Jr.
October 13, 1933 - June 8, 2017
Karl A. Baker, Jr., 83,
a resident of the Vernonia com-
munity, died Thursday, June 8,
2017 at his home. A Celebra-
tion of Life Service will be held
Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 3:00
pm at the Nehalem Valley Bible
Church, 500 North Street, Ver-
nonia, with Pastor Gary Taylor
officiating. Family and friends
are invited to attend a reception
immediately following the ser-
vice to be held in the fellowship
room of the church. A Private
Interment will be held at the
Willamette National Cemetery,
11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard

Suzanne K. Roberge
Suzanne K. Roberge,
62, a resident of the Forest
Grove community, died on
Wednesday afternoon, June 7,
2017 at her home.
A Celebration of Life

day, June 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm

hall of the funeral home.
Suzanne Kay Rob-
erge was born on September 3,
1954 in Princeton, Minnesota,
the daughter of Jerry Leo and
Nancy Ellen (Strand) Tanner.
At the age of 3 she moved with
her family to Corona, Califor-
nia where she was raised and
received her education.
She was united in mar-
riage to Jerome Joseph Roberge
on January 9, 1982 in River-
side, California. Following
their marriage, they made their
home in Corona for five years.
They later lived in the commu-
nities of Tucson, Arizona, Min-
neapolis, Minnesota, Chicago,
Illinois and Beaverton, Oregon
before moving to Forest Grove
in 1998, where they have resid-
ed since.
Suzanne worked in
preparation for microfilm-
ing services in Corona, and as
a playground attendant at her
son’s grade school in Palitine,
Illinois.
Among her special in-
terests she enjoyed fishing and
was an animal lover, she had
three special dogs, an Afghan
hound named Coots, a Golden
retriever named Doc, and a Blu-
etick hound named Bruce.
Survivors include her
husband Jerome J. “Jerry” Ro-
berge of Forest Grove, Oregon;
her son Matthew Joseph Rob-
erge of Cornelius, Oregon; her
parents Jerry and Nancy Tanner
of Roseburg, Oregon; her broth-
er Danny Tanner of Corona,
California; her two sisters and a
brother-in-law, Shelly and Rick
Triplett of Corona, California
and Cindy Blair of Corona, Cal-
ifornia; and many nieces and
nephews.
The family suggests
that remembrances may be con-
