6 community news april20 2017 On the Shelves By Shannon Romtvedt We are celebrating music this month at the Vernonia Library with Get Rhythm at the Library. The goal of our music program series is to encourage the use of music in early education and spread the love of music in the community, particularly with children. Our program series kicked off with a performance at the library by Andy Ferguson “Red Yarn”: Folk music and puppets. Red Yarn had the kids singing, dancing, jumping up, laying down, and even playing the guitar. Red Yarn donated some of his music cds to the library, which are available to check out. He played several songs from his albums Born in the Deep Woods and Deep Woods Revival. We will be asking him back next year as both kids and adults in attendance enjoyed the performance. One of the best we’ve had. Coming up, we are looking forward to the Rutabaga Rhythm Workshop at the School and the Vernonia Library. See the event schedule in “Upcoming Events” below. A Timberbound Concert will follow the workshops on Thursday, April 27, 7 pm at the Vernonia Grange. All ages are welcome to the Grange concert. Free admission, with donations accepted for the band and the Grange. At daytime workshops, students will have an opportunity to learn more about Vernonia’s rich music history. Younger students will stomp, clap, sing, and learn about rhythm. Older students, grades 3 - 5, will work on their own lyrics to folk tunes that originated from the Vernonia area. Thank you to Aaron Miller, Kendra Schlegel, and Dana Hyde at the Vernonia Schools for helping coordinate the workshop, and to the Vernonia Grange for hosting the Timberbound Concert. Our Get Rhythm at the Library series is made possible by grant funding through the Columbia County Cultural Coalition supported by the Oregon Cultural Trust, and through donations by the Friends of the Library, Vernonia Lions Club, and John “Jack” and Randal Harvey. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is a fabulous book not only for young girls but boys as well. Beautiful stories of women/teens and even a 10 year old, from all different cultures and from all different nations, that have overcome adversity and have become role models for all ages. I know the struggle each year to keep our expenditures in line, and I CANNOT imagine what cuts we would have to make if the debt repayment had to come from our annual operating bud- get. Craig Tolonen, Business Owner – I just think our schools are one of the most important parts of our community. I don’t mind paying taxes for things like police and fire and schools. Our kids need a chance and it’s a no brainer for me. I voted for the first bond in 2009, I voted for the last bond in November that failed, and I’ll vote for this one. Dana Hyde, School District Employee– It is absolutely my adult responsibility to support the bond for the simple fact that the students are my future. They deserve the best possible education we can offer. Students need to know they are cared for enough to spend that extra $20 a year on. Passing the bond is a no brainer! Even my 83 year old mother on a fixed income will vote YES. Also, the issue of our property value, it’s the bulk of most people’s net wealth.
