In Memory of...
Kathleen M. Tiffney
Kathleen M. Tiffney, age 92,
died at Quality Country Care AFH in
Vernonia, Oregon, on March 16, 2017.
Born April 24, 1924, in Weiser,
Idaho, to Acel and Iva Lolley, she at-
tended Washington Grade School and
graduated from Vernonia High School in
1942. On December 28, 1956, she mar-
ried Donald R. Tiffney.
She lived in Vernonia her entire
life. She worked at Montgomery Ward,
a bakery, and as a secretary for the Ver-
nonia Justice of the Peace, who was also
her father.
Kathleen was a member of the
Christian Church in Vernonia for most of
her life, and in later years attended the
Nehalem Valley Bible Church in Verno-
nia. Kathleen was involved in numerous
church activities. She was also a mem-
ber of a Barbie Doll Club in Beaverton,
Oregon. She had a passion for dolls
and spent many years collecting, and at-
tending doll conventions. Kathleen was
also a member of the Red Hat Society,
and a devoted Portland Trailblazers fan.
She enjoyed going to her little cabin at
the beach every chance she got. Kath-
leen especially enjoyed times spent with
her family and friends, either celebrating
holidays, weddings, birthdays, picnics,
eating out, shopping, or going to garage
sales.
Family left behind include her
husband Donald Tiffney of Vernonia;
daughter Allyson Cameron of Vernonia;
her sisters Marjorie Bellingham of Port-
land, and Barbara Weigand of Hillsboro;
nieces April Veit and Kristen Schleich;
nephews Monte Bellingham, Marty
Bellingham, Steve Landers, Gaylen
Weigand, and Brien Weigand.

Country Care AFH, Vernonia, for caring
and loving Kathleen, and their friend-
ship, love, and support to our family. We
will always be grateful.
A “Heavenly Birthday Celebra-
tion” was held for Kathleen Tiffney on
March 23, 2017, at 2:30 pm at the Ne-
halem Valley Bible Church, 500 North
Street in Vernonia.

Nina A. Shafer, 98, a longtime
resident of the Vernonia community,
died Tuesday morning, March 28, 2017
at the Community Hospice in Longview,
Washington.
A Memorial Service will be held
Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 1:00 pm at
the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Wit-
nesses, 880 Texas Avenue, Vernonia, OR
97064.
Private Interment will be held at
the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080
Bridge Street in Vernonia.
Nina Aileen Shafer was born
April 19, 1918 in Parker, Kansas, the
daughter of the late Robert L. Hodgson
and Mabel M. (Needy) Hodgson. She
was the oldest of five children.
She was united in marriage to
Lester Ervie “Les” Shafer on June 21,
1934 in Vancouver, Washington. Follow-
ing their marriage they resided in Scog-
gins Valley, until 1942 when they moved
to the Vernonia community, where she
had resided since.
Nina was preceded in death by
her husband, Les, on May 31, 1984 in
Vernonia, Oregon, after celebrating over
forty-nine years of marriage together.
She was a homemaker a won-
derful cook, loving wife, mother and
grandmother.
Nina was baptized as one of Je-
hovah’s Witnesses in July of 1939 and
was well known in the community for
her love of the Bible and her desire to
share its hope with all she could.
Among her special interests
she enjoyed were first and foremost
proclaiming God’s Kingdom. She also
loved gardening, her flowers, and often
sharing starts and seeds with others. She
was a self-taught musician and accom-
plished piano player.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, three brothers, one sister and
two of her daughters, Bonnie Jean and
Janice Marlene.
Survivors include five children
and their spouses, Philip and Janet Sha-
fer of McMinnville, Mike and Marleen
of Vernonia, Robert of Vernonia, Pam
and Sal Scotto of Vernonia, and Randy
and Lucy of Battleground, WA; and a
sister-in-law Irene Hodgson of Gold
Beach, Oregon.
Also surviving are her twenty
grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren,
and many more great-great grandchil-
dren, as well as several nieces and neph-
ews.

Edwina L. “Eddie” Siedelman,
84, a former resident of the Vernonia
community, late of Beaverton, died Fri-
day evening, March 24, 2017 at Avamere
at Bethany in Portland.

Eva McCoy, 78, a resident of
the Vernonia community, died Saturday,

Kenneth Louis Smith
Kenneth Louis Smith, age 76,
passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017
in Granbury, Texas.
He was born July 1, 1940 in
Phoenix, Arizona to Lewis and Net-
tie Wingo Smith. He served in the U.S.
Navy Seabees, was a member of the
VFW in Granbury and was a truck driv-
er.
Kenneth loved his kids, grand-
kids, his three former wives, and his
dogs, Lucky and Lady. He lived life to
the fullest, was hardworking, enjoyed
hunting and fishing when he was young-
er, was very friendly and always helped
others. He lived in Oregon four different
times and in Texas six different times.
Survivors include children
Kenny D. and wife Linda Smith, Tony
L. Smith, Linda and husband Bill Ben-
nis; stepchildren Susan and husband
George McDonald, Connie and husband
Marchelle Lee, Charlotte and husband
Mark Durham, Larry and wife Candice
Conley, Janice Hackbarth, and Marla
and husband Tony; 16 grandchildren; 14
great grandchildren; best friend Zelma
Smith; and sisters and brother Louise
McMurray, Lill Moore, Alice Morrison,
Eddy Smith, and Barbara Hart.
Kenneth was preceded in death
by a step-daughter Tammy Smith, and
step-son-in-law Ron Hackbarth.
