ODFW Film Presentation and Discussion at the Vernonia Grange
Following the Upper Nehalem Watershed
Council’s regularly scheduled 6:30 pm business meet-
ing on Thursday, March 23, there will be a presentation
from 7:15 - 8:30 by Derek Wiley, an Oregon Depart-
ment of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Assistant Project
Leader for the Salmonid Life-Cycle Monitoring project
in Tillamook.
Wiley will be showing two videos that were
fi lmed while conducting research and recreating on
the north Oregon Coast. Return to the River gives
viewers an intimate look at underwater behavior and
spawning of salmon and lamprey. Salmonid Life-
Cycle Monitoring in the NF Nehalem River (2015) is
a documentary about monitoring activities conducted
by ODFW on the North Fork Nehalem River during the
2015 adult trapping season for coho and fall Chinook.
After the fi lm Wiley will provide an update on results
from more recent monitoring in the NF Nehalem basin
and answer questions introduced in the fi lm.
Wiley received a Bachelors in Biology from
Towson University and a Masters in Fisheries and
Wildlife from Frostburg State University in Maryland
before moving to Oregon in 2004. Wiley has worked
with ODFW for 13 years. He currently provides
oversight of a fi eld crew responsible for operating
adult and juvenile fi sh traps and conducting spawning
and winter habitat surveys on the NF Nehalem River.
Outside of work Derek is an avid fl y fi sherman,
photographer, videographer, and hiker.
On the Shelves
By Shannon Romtvedt
Library staff , volunteers, and
about 85 other children and adults
celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday on
Thursday, March 2 at the library. Dr.
Seuss’s Birthday celebration is now
an annual event at the library; this
was the third year. The Cat in the
Hat came out to meet the kids and
read the story, Yertle the Turtle. Then
children spread out to diff erent
activities and challenges including
a Cat in the Hat craft, Birthday Cake,
Yertle the Turtle book stacking
challenge, Seuss bingo, and pictures
with the Cat in the Hat.
Thank you to Rachel
Langmaid for the amazing, Yertle the
Turtle birthday cake. Thank you to
the Scheuerman family for bringing
their display of limited edition copies
of original Dr. Seuss prints as well
as unorthodox taxidermy: the “Goo
goo eyed Tazmanian Wolghast” and
the “Turtle-necked sea turtle.” It was
wonderful having some Dr. Seuss
experts at our event!
Thank you to the Friends
of the Library for sponsoring and
for all of our event volunteers:
Danika Kiss, Claudine East, Alexa
Cook, Haily Fennell, Connor Fennell,
MaCayla Stevens, Jenny Williams,
Bill Langmaid, and Vanessa Johnson.
And a special thank you to Camrin
Eyrrick and Rachel Langmaid for
bringing our special guest, the Cat in
the Hat.
On Tuesday, March 7, the
library had a site visit from the Master
Gardeners class that is currently
meeting in Vernonia. Sye Laird did a
pruning lesson and demonstration.
And students from the class worked
as they learned, sprucing up the
library courtyard. The library was
lucky to benefi t from the class.
Thank you to Sye Laird, Chip Bubl,
and CiCi Bell for coordinating
this demonstration, and to all the
students of the Master Gardeners
class for pruning, despite the rain.
Coming up on Thursday,
March 23, 6:30 pm the Friends of
the Vernonia Library is hosting an
Oregon Humanities Conversation
Project program. The library hosts
Oregon Humanities (OH) programs
annually. The topic for the upcoming
OH program is “Mind the Gaps:
How Gender Shapes Our Lives,”
facilitated by Jade Aguilar, Assistant
Professor of Sociology and Women’s
and Gender Studies at Willamette
University. Conversation programs
are discussion based. The facilitator
presents information and opens it
up to audience discussion. Everyone
is welcome. Please come and join in
the conversation.

The library will be closed to the
public on Earth Day, Saturday, April
22 for an indoor and outdoor clean
up event. Projects include weeding,
pruning, sweeping, window washing,
and cleaning shelves and shifting
books. Staff are currently seeking
volunteers for the event, both for
indoor and outdoor projects. This
would be a great community service
