Loggers Finish 6 th at State Championship
The Vernonia Loggers boys
basketball team fi nished in 6 th place
at the State Basketball Championship
Tournament in Pendleton, winning
one game and losing twice during the
weekend of March 2-4.
The Loggers went into the
tournament as the #9 seed and were the
lowest seed to advance to the fi nal eight
from the round of 16.
The Loggers fell in their opening
game of the tournament to top ranked
Western Mennonite, losing 51-44. Brett
Elliott was named Player of the Game
for the Loggers, scoring 19 points and
grabbing 3 rebounds. Tristan Adams
added 13 points and Clay Sullivan had
8 points and 10 rebounds. The Loggers
struggled from the fi eld, shooting just
38% on the game and going 1-9 from
three point range in the fi rst half.
The Loggers bounced back in
their second game and stayed alive in
the tournament with a convincing 47-
36 win over #5 seed Imbler. Sullivan
was named Player of the Game for the
Loggers, scoring 18 points. Elliott added
11 points and Adams chipped in 9 points
and 6 rebounds. The Loggers trailed at
half time 25-23 but put the game away
in the second half, holding Imbler to just
16% shooting in the second half while
making 4-7 three point attempts.
In their fi nal game of the
tournament, with the 4 th place trophy on
the line, the Loggers fell to Northwest
League rival and #3 seeded Columbia
Christian 69-55. After staying close in
the fi rst half and trailing just 26-25, the
Loggers saw the game slip away from
them in the 3 rd quarter. Sullivan was
once again named Player of the Game
after scoring 22 points and grabbing 9
Following the completion of the
rebounds. Adams scored 11 points and
Brett Jones added 9 for the Loggers. It tournament, which was won by #4 seed
was the third time the Loggers had lost Santiam, both Sullivan and Elliott were
to Columbia Christian this season.
