School Board Report
At the January 26, 2017 School
Board Meeting:

After
Several
Cancelations – The Vernonia School
Board met on January 26 in a specially
scheduled meeting after both their
regularly scheduled meetings on
December 8 and January 12 had to be
canceled due in inclement weather.
Board Authorizes Bond Measure
Request – The Board approved a plan
to move forward with a bond measure
request for $6.8 million for the May
17, 2017 Oregon Special Election.

Board Approves Snow Day Make-
up Calendar – The Board approved
a proposal from Superintendent Aaron
Miller to make up days that were
lost to winter weather issues. Miller
proposed that the three days built into
the calendar for school cancelations
be used, so students will now attend
school on March 17, April 21, and
May 19. Other make-up days were
added to the calendar on May 26 and
June 9. In addition the District will add
10 minutes to the end of each school
day, beginning February 1, to make
up the hours for two additional school
cancelations.
Board Presented with Division 22
Standards – As required by the state,
Superintendent Aaron Miller presented
the Board with the District’s Division
22 Report to the Community. The
Division 22 report is a self-reporting
tool that provides verifi cation that the
District is in compliance with standards
for public elementary and secondary
schools in 55 categories. The only area
where the District is not compliant is in
Media Programs because the District
does not employ a certifi ed Librarian.
District for 21 years, and Instructional
Assistant Doris Buckholz, who has
worked there for 25 years. Loy’s last
day was January 31 and Buckholz’s
last day will be June 8.
January Declared “School Board
Recognition Month” – Superintendent
Aaron Miller read a proclamation
from Oregon Governor Kate Brown
declaring January as School Board
Recognition Month. The Board was
honored with certifi cates, along with
treats and a poster from students.
Board Approves Out-of-State Trav-
el Request – The Board approved a
request from Vernonia Elementary
School Principal Aaron Miller for
travel for himself, along with instruc-
tors Laura Blacker, Michelle Eagle-
son and Kendra Schlegel, to travel to
a one day training on effective uses of
Professional Learning Communities.
The training will be held in the White
River School District in Buckley, WA
on February 6. Registration and travel
fees will be paid through the District’s
Focus School funding.
Board Approves Policies – The Board
approved numerous policy updates,
with the exception of policy 6.1.15
IGAI Human Sexuality, AIDS/HIV,
Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Health
Education, which was removed at the
request of Board member Brittanie
Roberts, who wanted additional review
of the policy.

Vernonia Elementary School
Administrative Assistant Patty Loy
retired on January 31. Aff ectionately
know as “Miss Patty” to generations
of grade school students, Loy was
surprised by the 2017 senior class
before her retirement and honored with
purple hearts (Loy’s favorite color) and a
poster with all their thumb prints.
