VHS Fall Sports Update
Volleyball – The Lady Loggers are
8-6 overall this season and sit in 5 th
place with a 4-3 record in North-
west League play.
After a difficult 3-2 loss to
west division rival Knappa (25-19,
16-25, 25-15, 16-25, 12-15) on Sep-
tember 15, Vernonia bounced back
with league wins over Columbia
Christian (3-0) and City Christian
(3-0, 3-0) before losing to Delphian
3-1 on October 4. The Vernonia
girls also stumbled with non league
losses to Warrenton in the Vernonia
Tournament and Jefferson in the
Western Mennonite Tournament.
The Lady Loggers are look-
ing forward to an important Home-
coming Week match up at home
with long time rivals Faith Bible on
October 6 and then a return match
with Knappa at home on October 15,
which could have playoff implica-
tions.
Football – The Loggers have a
2-3 record as they open Northwest
League play with their Homecoming
Game on October 7 against Gaston.
The Loggers played well in
a 20-19 win over Oakridge, before
losing 40-8 to Culver and 54-14 to
St. Mary’s from Medford.
Following their match up
with Gaston the Loggers will travel
to Nestucca on October 14, play at
home against Knappa on October 21
and finish the regular season on Oc-
tober 28 at Neah-Kah-Nie.
PCC Col. Co. Update
• Portland Community College (PCC) remains on
schedule to build its Training Center as part of the
Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC).
The plan is for the estimated 25,000 square-foot
building to be completed and open in fall 2018.
• PCC has enrolled 10 students from Columbia
County in the Future Connect fall student cohort. This
program offers first generation and/or low income
students intensive support prior to and during their
time at PCC.
• This fall, PCC enrolled its first class of Oregon
Promise students. Oregon Promise is a new state-
funded program which encourages residents who are
graduating high school or are recent GED graduates
to attend a community college in Oregon.
• PCC is excited to offer a New Directions class in
St. Helens. New Directions is dedicated to easing the
transition to college and career for single mothers,
displaced homemakers and other female students in
transition. This is a free four-credit transferable class.
