Where Are They Now? Kahli Anderson
choice for an assignment. She had a
strong interest in World War II history
based on spending a lot of time with, and
having discussions with, her grandfather,
David Anderson. David Anderson is
a renowned artist from Vernonia who
has shown an art exhibit based on the
holocaust called “To Break a Butterfly.”
He also created an art piece for one of
the Japanese crown princesses in 1990.
Anderson also noted that her favorite
class during her studies at Pacific
University was “Holocaust Literature.”
“I had always had a huge
interest in World War II after
spending so much time with
my grandfather and discussing
what had happened during the
holocaust and what had happened
in Japan,” says Anderson. “It was
something I always wanted to go
and experience, and the culture
there is really amazing.”
Following training at a
joint base in Texas with medics
from the Air Force, Anderson was
sent to Yukosuka, Japan, where
she spent two eventful years. She
arrived right after the tsunami hit
Japan in 2011 and there was a lot
of volunteer work. “There was a
project called Tomodachi for the
allied forces to help with tsunami
relief,” explains Anderson. “We
went up near the Fukoshima
nuclear power plant to try to help
because a lot of those cities and towns
had just been completely demolished.”
Anderson says she also had an
opportunity to travel all over Japan,
including visiting Hiroshima and

With her enlistment
coming to an end in February of
2017, Anderson says she plans
to withdraw from the military
and use her GI Bill to return
to school and study nursing.
