Summer in Vernonia
9
The Summer Meals Program provides a safe place for families to come during the
summer months and receive lunch each weekday during the school vacation. Kids
eat for free and adults pay just $3.00. There is a salad bar and a full meal, along with
activities and fresh produce available to take home. Last week the Vernonia Library,
in partnership with the Forest Grove Library, was on hand to give away a free book
to each child who came for lunch as part of the Summer Reading Program; 72 books
were given away.
Summer in Vernonia usually means more bicyclists passing through or stopping
in town. Bike riders travel on the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, the Tualatin Valley
Scenic Bikeway (which includes the Banks-Vernonia Trail) and the newly opened
Crown Zellerbach Trail, with Vernonia as the perfect rest stop for lunch and a
beverage. On June 18 riders passed through Vernonia on the initial Columbia
Century Challenge, a loop that took riders from St. Helens to Vernonia, Clatskanie
and Rainier. This first year event was a big success and was enjoyed by numerous
riders who enjoyed the scenery and hospitality of each local community.
The Vernonia Library’s Summer Reading
Program is an annual way for students
to stay active and engaged in learning
during the summer break. Students are
encouraged to keep a log of the books they
read and are entered in drawings to win
prizes. Scheduled activities and special
programs provide entertainment throughout
the summer. On June 23 Charlie Brown
performed his juggling and comedy routine
for almost 70 attendees. Up next, “Move
Like a Mammoth” on Wednesday, July 13,
10:30 am for families with grade school
children, presented by a museum educator
from the Museum of Natural and Cultural
History in Eugene.
