Creatures and Humane Society
Begin New Rescue Partnership
Thankfully,
people often look to
animal shelters and
rescues when ready
to bring a new pet
into their homes.
C r e a t u r e s ,
the pet shop in Ver-
nonia, is very ex-
cited to begin work-
ing with Columbia
Humane
Society
(CHS) as one of
their ambassadors
to help connect their
rescued pets with
owner’s right here in Vernonia!
CHS will be bringing appro-
priate animals for the Creatures store
to show and adopt out to folks. These
pets are under the CHS ownership and
adopting families will go through the
same adoption process in Vernonia as
they would in St. Helens and receive the
same incentives and care for their pets.
The first CHS kittens arrived in
late June. Jersey and Jasper are two su-
per cute three month
old kittens originally
rescued from Cali-
fornia. They’ve been
neutered, vaccinat-
ed, wormed, Leuke-
mia tested, micro-
chipped, and come
with a free vet check
by your choice of
vet, 30 days of free
pet health insurance,
a carrier and more!
C u s t o m e r s
may not be used to
seeing the bigger
fee for kittens in the store, but after you
consider all that you’re getting, and
considering that you’re supporting the
local Humane Society, we think you’ll
agree, it’s well worth it! Creatures will
still be supporting the Feral Cat Coali-
tion of Oregon in socializing, caring
for, and homing feral kittens as well.
And as always, thank you Ver-
nonians, local supporters, and those yet
to be.

success!
The Vernonia Booster softball
teams (8U, 10U, 12U &14U) are in-
vited each year to play in the St. Hel-
ens girls softball (SHGS) league. Along
with teams from Clatskanie, Rainier
and St. Helens, they play an average
of 12-18 games throughout the season
(depending on the age group and the
weather).
The 2016 season for
Vernonia Extreme14U had its ups and
downs as the girls played a total of 19
games during the seven week season,
with 11 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. They
also participated in the Chief Ralph
Painter Softball Fundraiser Tourna-
ment May 21-22, raising the entry fees
through a carwash with the 12U team in
May.

were returning 14U players, with the
rest being younger 12U players “play-
ing up.” Many would not have had
high hopes for this young team but their
coach, Jolene Stegmann-Walters, did.
She said, even before the first practice,
she planned to take this team to the State
Tournament. She believed in these girls
even when the girls didn’t yet believe in
themselves.
Practice and game schedules
were demanding; however the skills
of each and every girl improved and
a team bond was formed. At the State
Tournament it all came together and the
girls proved their coach right, digging
deep to find their strength and taking
first place in the State Tournament.
Going to the State Tournament
would not have been possible without
the sponsors: Jason Busch Trucking,
Cedar Ridge Retreat and Conference
Center, Intermountain Drilling Supply
& Responsive Supply. In addition to the
car wash fundraiser, the team also sold
Krispy Kreme Donuts and did a can
drive to reach their goal of participating
in the State Tournament.
The team wants to give a spe-
cial thanks to head coach Jolene Wal-
ters, and assistant coaches Shawn
Haney and Levi Whiteman, and Joe
Walters for giving their time, patience
and love for the game. Coming in first
place at the State Tournament was a
great way to end the season!
