Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Editor,

Since starting the Community
Wide Garage Sale in 1999 I have spon-
sored and organized the event each year
since, but this year the Vernonia Cham-
ber of Commerce is taking over my role
in this event.

I want to thank everyone who
participated over the years. Let’s keep
making it bigger and better each year
forward.

For information please email

To the Editor,

The town of Vernonia and the
“Dewey Pool Fund” are a little bit better,
richer and cooler, thanks to the golfers
and those want-to-be golfers, as well as
poker players who were at Vernonia Golf
Club Saturday, June 25 th . Although no
one won the $10,000 Hole In One Prize
on the 150 yard hole #7 or #16, it was a
fun, sun shining day as 32 golfers hit the
links.

This was the 1 st Annual Lions
Club Golf Tournament. It has been
many years since the Lions Club host-
ed a tournament but we did not lack for
enthusiasm. The winning team with 65,
or 6 under par, was Rick Lutrell, Brad
DeBray, Spencer DeBray and Maryanne
(a ringer from out of town). The “Best
Dressed” as everyone agreed, went to
Vince Aszman’s team, a fellow Lion.
They also had the most fun, getting their
money’s worth of strokes for the day.
Mike Hasskarl scored Long Drive for
men, and Maryanne for women. Nick
Zavales won Long Putt, on the infamous
hole #3.

It has been said that “It takes a
Village to raise a child” and you can say
this is true of all local fund raising ef-
forts. It take a whole community to ac-
complish great things. All net proceeds
will go into the “Dewey Pool Fund” at
US Bank, sponsored by Vernonia Lions.
The Lions have already helped clean
the park area, refinished the wadding
pool, put up new fencing and purchased
benches. Now the club wants to help
make a safe access path for everyone, in-
cluding those who deal with disabilities.
So thank you Vernonia for your support
through all your endeavors so far to sup-
port this worthy cause.

Thank you to those who helped
support the Golf Tournament and the
Poker game with cash, prizes and their
smiling faces and a big “shout out” to Li-
ons Club members who gave their time
and sweet efforts to make this all hap-
pen.

Also, thank you to all our Spon-
sors: US Bank, Robert Watts Con-
struction, Vernonia Auto Parts, Vernonia
Realty, Vernonia Golf Club, Natural Path

Hi! My name is Bruce "Almighty."
I am a black neutered male. I am an
older cat but healthy. I came here from
a shelter partner that felt that the great
adopters of Columbia County would be
a better match for me. I am a great
kitty. I like my inside time, but I also
really love going outside. Please stop
by and meet all 10 lbs of me. My
adoption fee is $110.00. If you have
any questions please call or email.

To the Editor,

I’ve known Wayne Mayo for
over thirty years and he’s my choice
for County Commissioner. Wayne has
many outstanding qualities that would
make him an exceptional commissioner.
He’s clear thinking, approachable and
straight-forward. He also has the cour-
age to make tough decisions. However,
what’s most compelling to me is his
willingness to step in and help people,
regardless of who they are or how diffi-
cult the circumstances, and never expect
anything in return. If you’re in a jam,
you’d be fortunate to have Wayne near-
by. This is a man who truly cares about
people.

The next few years are critical
for Columbia County. The Commis-
sioners will have a lot on their plates.
Wayne’s ability to work with people and
solve problems will be needed more than
ever.

Sheriff’s Office Now
Managing Dog Licensing

Effective July 1, 2016, the
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has
begun overseeing the licensing of dogs
in Columbia County. The Clerk’s Office
ceased responsibility for Dog Licensing
on June 30.

The goal is to increase the
convenience to dog owners, minimize
confusion in the enforcement of dog
control laws and ordinances, and to
increase participation by dog owners in
the licensing program by making it more
user friendly by:
• Enhancing communication between
licensing and enforcement
• Providing a full-time licensing clerk to
handle dog and CHL licensing
• Increasing the number of dog license
providers around the County.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently
working on a way for dog owners to
be able to obtain their licenses online,
through veterinary offices and through
the animal shelter. Any way that we
can better meet the needs of a mobile,
commuting public is our end goal.

The license may be obtained
in person at the Sheriff’s Office (901
Port Avenue, St. Helens) or on-line
at http://www.co.columbia.or.us/sheriff
(click on link to Dog Control under the
Enforcement Division Menu).
