late of Port-
land, Oregon,
died Monday
morning, May
30, 2016 at the
Providence St.
Vincent Medi-
cal Center in
Portland.
A Celebration of Life Service
was held on Saturday, June 11, 2016
at 1:00 pm at the Cabin in Vernonia,
901 Park Avenue in Vernonia, with
Pastor Don Wantland, Northwest
Independent Church Extension in
Castle Rock, Washington, officiating.
Family Graveside Services were held
at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080
Bridge St. Vernonia, Oregon.
David Bruce McNair, Jr. was
born February 13, 1978 in Seaside,
Oregon, the son of David Bruce McNair,
Sr. and Tammy Lynn (Norton) Libbey.
He was raised in the Seaside community,
until the age of five when he moved with
his family to the Vernonia community,
where he was raised and received his
education.
He had worked for several years
as a logger in the Vernonia area and later
as a stone mason in the construction
industry for several years.
Among his special interests
he enjoyed the outdoors, especially
camping, cooking, bow hunting, rock
hounding, carving and riding his quad.
David was also a military history buff
as well as a Green Bay Packers fan. He
also had a special love for children and
animals, especially caring for his cat
“Bondo” and his cockatiel “Charlie.”
Survivors include the love of his
life, Joshauna Savorelli of Portland; his
father, Bruce McNair of Vernonia; his
mother and step-father, Tammy and Tony
Libbey of Hillsboro; his five children,
Robert Brian McNair of Hillsboro;
Paityn McNair of Chubbuck, Idaho;
E’Lora Peace Rodenbaugh of Portland;
Jaiden Paul Lemmon of Portland;
and Khailund Lawrence Lemmon, of
Portland; his brother, Joshua McNair of
Vernonia; and his grandparents, Gerie
Reynolds (Theres) and Nellie McNair.
Also surviving are many aunts,
uncles and cousins.
The family suggests that
remembrances may be contributions to
the David Bruce McNair, Jr. Memorial
Fund, for an educational fund for his
children, in care of any U.S. Bank Banch
or to the Vernonia Public Library, 701
Weed Ave, Vernonia, OR 97064, in his
memory.

Carol Sawyer, 1940-2016
Carol Sawyer was born October
23, 1940, to Joseph Herbert and Aura
(Goodenough) Sawyer in Maracaibo,
Venezuela, where her father worked as
a petroleum geologist. She attended
grammar school in Venezuela and Ruston
Academy, a preparatory high school in
pre-Castro Cuba. Carol studied at Reed
College, Portland, Oregon, from 1958
to 1961 where she majored in Literature
and Romance Languages. Bilingual in
Spanish and English from childhood,
Carol was also fluent in French and
adept in Portuguese and Italian. She
left college and traveled and worked
throughout South America, France,
India, and Spain for the next thirty years.
While in India she added conversational
Hindi to her language skills.
She married the late Alain
“Truffi” Metivier in 1970 in Varanasi
(Benares), India, where he studied under
a master Indian classical musician.
Carol taught English and cultivated her
deep knowledge of Hatha, Tantric and
Kundulini yoga and Indian dance during
their years in India. Returning with
Truffi to France in 1974, she obtained
a Certificate in Teaching English as
a Foreign Language and taught adult
students.

Fair Lady Court, an annual event at the
Columbia County Fair that honors senior
volunteers.
Carol regularly hired local
youth to assist her in her home and
garden as her mobility declined. With
them she shared her knowledge and
love of herbs, flowers and vegetables
as well as philosophy, poetry, literature,
psychology, and multiculturalism.
She was an accomplished writer and
published poet, earning an Honorable
Mention in the 1999 Writers’ Digest
poetry competition. An ordained
Universal Life Minister, Carol performed
at least two marriages for Vernonia
friends.
When Carol’s mobility and
medical problems required full-time
care, she moved to an adult foster care
home in Beaverton in 2012. She lived
there until October 2015 when she
transferred to a larger residential facility
in Gresham. She made new friends
in both places and continued to be a
voracious reader. Carol accepted with
surprising grace her new limitations
given her fiercely independent and free
roaming life as a citizen of the world.
She died peacefully on April 18, 2016.
Carol is survived by her brother
and sister-in-law, Ron and Alicia Sawyer
of Tepoztlan, Mexico; her brother,
Matthew of San Francisco; niece, Asha
Sawyer who currently resides in Kenya;
her nephew, Ivan Sawyer of Mexico;
many cousins; a number of “adopted
daughters” in Spain, California and
Oregon; and many friends in Vernonia.
A Celebration of Life will be
held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 25, at
the Vernonia Grange. Per her wishes,
her ashes will be buried on private
forestland just outside of Vernonia. In
lieu of flowers, gifts in honor of Carol
may be made to Vernonia Hands on Art
or a charity of choice.

her husband in 1977, she moved to the
island of Ibiza (Eivissa), the third largest
of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous
community of Spain. In Ibiza she taught
Hatha yoga and led bilingual groups in
somatic psychotherapy while relishing
the artistic community that flourished
there. She lived rurally and had extensive
gardens from which she crafted perfumes
and herbal remedies under her Aphrodite
trademark. She worked occasionally as
a script translator and synch adaptor for
English, Spanish and French films.
Returning to the United States
in 1991, Carol learned to drive, bought a
motorbike and resumed her undergradu-
ate studies. She received a Bachelor of
Arts in Psychology from New College
of San Francisco in 1994. She obtained
certifications in Counseling,
Alcohol and Drug Studies, and
was a PhD candidate in Con-
sciousness and Transformation
at the California Institute of
Integral Studies in San Fran-
cisco. She was an instructor at
City College in Spanish Con-
versation, Memoir Writing and
Traditional Symbol Systems.
She also worked as a diver-
sity consultant, was an adjunct faculty
instructor at New College, and taught
creative writing in the San Francisco
County Jail system.
Carol experienced a combination
of health issues that led her to early semi-
retirement in Oregon. Looking for a quiet
town in a green river valley, she found her
home in Vernonia in 2001. During the
next eleven years she continued teaching
youth and adults a variety of subjects
through Vernonia Schools, Portland
Community College and independently:
creative, memoir and poetry writing;
written and conversational Spanish;
women’s spirituality; and collage. Her
wide-ranging interests included world
religions, astrology and tarot.
Carol’s “Art Saves Lives”
bumper sticker summarized her passion
for the arts. An active board member of
Hands on Art from 2003 to 2007, she
participated in organizing Art in the Park,
a one week arts camp for youth, where
she taught collage making. She was a
member of the Oregon Cultural Trust’s
Columbia County Coalition from 2005
to 2011, and she won first place trophies
in the Vernonia Senior Center, Oregon
State and National Senior Spelling Bees
in 2002 and 2003. She was Vernonia’s
