School Board Report
At the June 9, 2016 School Board
Meeting:
Board Authorizes Bond – After
receiving an update from Superintendent
Aaron Miller the Board authorized
Miller to move forward with a new
bond proposal for the November 2016
election. The bond would raise funds to
repay debt from the construction of the
new school campus and the development
of new capital projects on the campus,
including the possible construction of
a new football stadium and track. The
new bond authorized by the Board
would raise an anticipated $6.8 million.
A public meeting has been scheduled to
receive input from the community about
priority projects with the bond funding.

University and Walden University. She
worked for 11 years as an instructional
assistant in the Vernonia School District
and did her student teaching in Vernonia
as well. She has been teaching in Friday
Harbor, Washington for the past 13 years
and is very excited to be returning to
Vernonia.
Board Approves Superintendent
Contract – After recessing to Executive
Session under ORS 192.660(2)(i) “To
review and evaluate the performance
of the chief executive officer or any
other public officer, employee, or
staff member...,” the Board returned
to open session and took two actions.
The Board approved the contract with
the Superintendent. The Board also
amended Resolution 1516-03, renewing
a contract with an employee previously
recommended for nonrenewal.
Board Adopts 2016-17 Budget –
Following a public hearing at which
there was no public testimony, the Building Reports – High School
Board approved Resolution 1516-07 and Principal Nate Underwood told the
adopted the 2016-17 budget.

District Hires New Teacher – The and staff will be trained to implement it

recommendation to hire Deborah Taylor team will study formative assessments
as a new 1 st and 2 nd grade teacher. Miller this summer as well. Underwood said
said Taylor is a graduate of Pacific middle school staff are considering
implementing an 8 th grade project
similar to the Senior Project that would
be a requirement for promotion.
Grade School Principal Aaron
Miller told the Board the Mist Open
House on June 7 was well attended.
He said Self Managers earned a field
trip to the Portland Zoo and expressed
thanks for the return of Councilor David
Spackman this school year and praised
his work with these students. Miller
told the Board elementary students
participated in Graduation Sparkle
Day on May 25 and helped prepare the
campus grounds for graduation as part of
Mr. Krahn’s project based learning class

at the high school.
Student Reports – Amanda Rose
Sicard updated the Board on activities
at the high school, telling the Board that
students studying Spanish earned 204
college credits through the Willamette
Promise program. She told the Board a
blood drive will be held on June 29 at
the school from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Sicard updated the Board on a successful
spring sports season.
Lauren Ely and Dakota Willard
told the Board about the 8 th grade Close
Up trip to Washington, D.C.
Vernonia Students of the Month
May 2016
Vance Landry
Grade 5
Vance's teacher is very proud of the tremen-
dous progress he has shown this quarter.
Vance has shown great responsibility turning in
his assignments on time. He isn’t afraid to ask
questions when he needs help and has shown
great maturity over the past few months. In his
free time Vance raises show rabbits and likes to
ride quads.
Taylor Grant
Grade 6
baylor's teachers say she is conscientious
about her work and puts forth great effort. She
has a good attitude, usually has a smile on her
face and really cares about learning. baylor
says her favorite subject is math. She plays
volleyball and likes to do arts and crafts.
Alexis Scott
Grade 12
Alexis was recently inducted into the National
Honor Society. She worked on the school
yearbook this year. She says her favorite
subject is English. Next year she plans to attend
the University of Oregon to study forensics.
Outside of school she is a member of the
Freewheelers Club.
