Lady Loggers Advance in State Playoffs, Fall to Top Ranked Pilot Rock
2016
The Vernonia Lady Loggers advanced to the
second round of the State Playoffs, defeating Burns
6-4, before falling 7-0 to Pilot Rock, the top seed in the
tournament.
Autumn Sorenson’s crucial hit drove in the tying
and go ahead runs against Burns.
The Lady Loggers faced a tough draw in the
state playoff bracket. Ranked 11th in the state at the
end of the season, Vernonia was given the eighth seed
in the 16 team tournament, the final spot in the top of
the bracket due to their winning the District 1 title.
They faced a tough Burns team at home in the opening
round on May 25 and won in dramatic fashion.
Burns finished their season third in a very
strong District 6, with a 9-6 league record and a 16-10
record overall. District 6 placed four teams in the state
tournament, including Pilot Rock and Union Cove, the
top two ranked teams in the state. Pilot Rock’s only
league loss this year was to Burns. Burns ended their
season ranked eighth in the state, three spots ahead of
Vernonia and were seeded ninth in the state tourna-
ment.
Vernonia and Burns traded runs early in the
match up and entered the bottom of the fifth inning

with Burns leading 3-2. In the Lady Loggers
half of the inning, shortstop Payton Wolf al-
most tied the game when she belted a long
shot to center field that just barely stayed in
play when it bounced off the top of the
outfield fence. Wolf ended up on second
with a double and was stranded at third
and the Lady Loggers still trailed by one.
Both teams got good pitching all
game with Vernonia’s Kassidy Fetch get-
ting stronger as the game went on and she
quickly got the side out in the top of the
sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth
the Lady Loggers finally broke through.

Everett with the go ahead run when Everett forced
base and Wolf drove in Sorenson and Whitton with an-
a jarring collision with the catcher at the plate and
other deep shot to center field to make it 6-3. Wolf was
thrown out trying to stretch her double into
a triple but the damage was done.
Fetch gave up a run in the top of the
seventh but then struck out the next batter
for the second out and got the next batter

Vernonia traveled to Pilot Rock to face
the number one ranked Rockets on May
27. Pilot Rock finished their regular sea-
son with a 14-1 record in the tough District
6 and were 24-3 overall on the season. The
Lady Loggers kept the game close until
the final innings, trailing just 3-0, but gave
four more runs and Pilot Rock clinched the
win.
