Volunteer Job Fair to Highlight P.E.O. Tea Party
Community Opportunities
Vernonia area residents are
invited to attend a unique job fair to learn
about volunteer opportunities within the
community.
The Volunteer Job Fair will
be held on Thursday, June 9 from 5:00
to 9:00 pm in the large gymnasium at
the Vernonia Schools. The job fair is
being hosted by Vernonia Community
Solutions.
A recent community survey
revealed that while a large segment of the
Vernonia area population would like to
volunteer, they don’t for many reasons.
Several of the top reasons included,
being unaware of opportunities and not
being asked.
The Volunteer Job Fair will bring
together organizations from around the
community with potential volunteers
looking for ways they can participate in
and improve their hometown. Potential
volunteers will have a chance to meet with
current volunteers and hear about groups,
histories, missions, and descriptions of
jobs that need volunteers.
Volunteers are often the
lifeblood of a small community and
the organizations they participate in
are routinely the way much work gets
accomplished in a small town. Groups
like the Vernonia Lions Club, the
Vernonia Boosters, the Vernonia Area
Chamber of Commerce, and the Vernonia
Rural Fire Protection District all provide
needed services and are all operated
mostly on the power of volunteers.
Most organizations throughout
the community are currently finding
it difficult to recruit new volunteers
because local residents have numerous
commitments and constraints including
commute times to work and family
obligations. Vernonia has seen a steady
decline in volunteers over the past several
years, but the need is still present. In
some situations it is even greater as long-
time, and often over worked, volunteers
become burned out and quit.
The Volunteer Job Fair is a
great chance for citizens to get involved
in their community, develop new
relationships, lend a helping hand, and
make a difference.

Young girls and their moms,
grandmas, aunties, cousins and sisters
had fun at the Second Annual Tea
Party at the Cabin in Vernonia on
May 14. During the afternoon, light
refreshments and desserts were served.
A Vernonia scholarship
recipient, Jeana Gump, entertained the
group with memories of her personal
life and schooling. She worked her
way through much adversity to obtain
a Bachelor of Arts degree. “I am
very thankful to P.E.O. for providing a
scholarship to help me reach my goal,”
she said.
Along with her studies and
family responsibilities, Jeana has
found time to become a long distance
runner, and has competed in a number
of marathons and half-marathons. Her
inspirational talk was highlighted by
much humor and sincerity, and was
enjoyed by all.
Musical entertainment was
furnished by Alexa, Katie and Mariah
Cook, and Breanna Gardner, who
delighted the audience with a cappella
songs.
Three baskets were raffled off
during the party, and the winners were:
• A large flower pot filled with
gardener’s supplies—won by Mary
Ann Shaw.
• A “bath” basket of scents and
lotions—won by Dede Webb.
• A young girl’s basket full of girlie
things—won by Evalynn Burch.
The Best Hat contest was won
by Gwen Estes.
All of the proceeds from
the tea party will be used to provide
scholarships for women. P.E.O. is
very appreciative of the community
support for this annual spring tea, and
is already looking forward to the third
annual tea party!

Janelle Cedergreen is the President of the Library
Board and volunteers her time, along with six
other members, to improve library services, update
library rules and policies, and help maintain the
building/grounds. Janelle enjoys mysteries also;
favorite authors are J.A. Jance, Agatha Christie,
and recently, Craig Johnson’s Longmire Mysteries.
Janelle says she may be stuck in a rut, but mystery
stories totally peek her interest. She is currently
reading A Study In Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle.

For community members who live outside of the
city limits interested in having a membership
at the library, please come by and check out
the library. As of March 1, 2016, the fee has
been reduced from $40 a year to $25 a year
per household. With a library membership at
the Vernonia Public Library, you not only have
access to our materials but also to other libraries
through the Oregon Passport Program (includes all
Washington County Libraries, Multnomah County
Libraries, and more).
Friends of the Vernonia Public Library
is also now sponsoring memberships through
the “Out of City Limit Sponsorship Program.”
This option is for individuals and families who
are interested in joining the library but the
membership fee poses a financial hardship. If
interested in a sponsorship, fill out an application
at the library. If interested in donating to the
sponsorship program (to help make more
sponsorships available), contact the Library

Summer Reading is Coming!
Writers’ Group
First day to sign-up for Summer Reading: Monday,
June 13. For children, birth through age 14. Sign-
up at the library. Receive free Oregon State Fair,
Oregon Zoo tickets (limited number available) and
other incentives. Enter a weekly prize drawing
for every hour you read. Return your time log
between July 25 and August 12 to choose a free
paperback book and enter a grand prize drawing.
During Summer Reading there are also a variety
of free programs and events. Story and Craft
programs every Tuesday, 10:30 – 11: 30 am, June
13 – June 19. Readers Theater, Charlie Brown the
Juggler, “Move Like a Mammoth” with the Museum
of Natural and Cultural History, Stages Youth
Academy, and Reptile Man! A full list of Summer
Reading programs will be available at the library,
on the library website, on the library Facebook
page, and in the Voice.
