VHS Spring Sports Report

Sophie, competed in Breakaway Roping
and took 4 th place, earning a spot in the
Regional competition in Moses Lake,
Washington on June 18-19. Pedersen
also finished 17 th in Working Rancher
and 11 th overall for High Point Individual
Versatility.
Track and Field – Eight Vernonia
athletes qualified for the state meet at
the Northwest League District meet on
May 13 and 14 at Portland Christian
High School.
The Vernonia boys finished
second to Nestucca, although the
Loggers really made them work for it,
scoring 154 points to Nestucca’s 172 and
the championship wasn’t decided until
the final few events. The Vernonia girls
finished fourth.
The Loggers will compete at
the state meet on May 19 and 20.

“We gave it everything we had, and if
we had gotten just a couple of breaks, we
could have pulled it off,” said Vernonia
head coach Byron Brown about the boys
second place finish. “The kids competed
their hearts out but we came up just a
little bit short. I couldn’t be more proud
of the way they competed.”
Clay Sullivan was clearly the
athlete of the meet for the Loggers, but
did not receive that award from the rest
of the coaches, winning four district
championships in the long jump, high
hurdles (2 nd year in a row for both), the
300 hurdles (a new event for Sullivan)
and the 4x100 meter relay.
The 4x100 relay team (Jared
Medearis, Steve Burns, Clay Sullivan
and Rob Connor) won their event,
finishing just .002/ second behind the
district record (set by Vernonia in 2012).
Rob Connor won district
championships in the 100 and 200
meters and anchored the 4x100. Steve
Burns also qualified for state in the 100,
finishing second and took third in the
200, and ran a 53 second split in the
4x400.
The Loggers swept the high
jump, with a rare jump-off deciding the
state qualifiers. Francesco Mian and
Arne Schiemann qualified for state;
Brett Jones, defending champ was 3 rd
although all 3 jumped 5’8”.
Devon Shay qualified for state
in the 400 meter run with a second place
finish to the outstanding City Christian
runner, Adam Brown, who broke the
district record.
On the girl’s side Justine Larue
was the lone competitor qualifying for
state with a second place finish in the long
jump. “They might have been fourth but
they competed strongly and just missed
state qualifying in several events,” said
Brown about the girls squad.
“Despite the worst training
facilities in the league, if not the state,
our athletes continue to perform at an
outstanding level,” said Brown. “Some
work was done on the track, replacing
the weeds, grass and mud with a new
layer of cinders, which helped a lot,
and we really appreciate it. However,
it is still very difficult, even dangerous,
for us to practice long and triple jump,
hurdles, starts and relays. I also think
the kids should get the credit for their
accomplishments more so than the
coaches. It’s a case of everyone doing
the best they can with what we have.”

unaware of oppor-
tunities and not
being asked.

Baseball – The Vernonia boys finished
league play in third place with a 12-6
Northwest League record and a 14-7
record overall. The Loggers were
scheduled to compete in the league
playoffs on Wednesday, May 18 with
an opening game against fourth place
Nestucca, with the winner of that game
challenging second place Neah-Kah-
Nie for the second place berth from the
league in the state playoffs.
Head coach Joe Walters says
the Loggers have hit the ball well this
season with Brett Elliot, Blade Ware,
Hayden Cieloha, Steele Ware, and
Bailey Morrison all hitting over .400
in 18 league games. Elliot led the team
in batting, hitting .475 with 29 hits and
finished second in RBIs with 17. Steele
Ware hit two home runs, batted .442 and
had 14 RBIs in just 13 games. Brendyn
(Pee Wee) Mulliken hit .389 and led the
team in runs scored with 26. Cieloha
was second on the team in hits with 23
and batted .442. Gaven Everett hit .349
and led the team in RBIs with 18. Adam
Haun was the most improved player
according to Walters, hitting .317 with
13 hits and 10 RBIs in 16 games.
Walters said the Logger’s
defense was also strong, with Mulliken,
Steele Ware, Cieloha, Blade Ware and
Elliot all playing keys roles.
The Loggers received strong
pitching from Bailey Morrison who led
the team in innings pitched with 44 and
strikeouts with 59. Cieloha threw 26
innings and struck out 29, while Elliott
pitched 17 innings and Jake Butcher 12.
Everett has been solid behind the plate.
