P.E.O. Spring Tea
Tickets are now available for
P.E.O.’s Spring Tea, to be held at the
Cabin in Vernonia (Scout Cabin) on
Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 1:00 pm.
Tickets may be purchased at R&S
VERNONIA
Market, in the Video Department--or
from any P.E.O. member. Tickets are
$10.00 for adults and $7.00 for children
under 12.
There will be gift baskets to
raffle, a guest speaker, random photos,
and more. Sandwiches and cookies will
be served, along with tea (of course), and
coffee and punch as well. All proceeds
will be used for scholarships for local
women interested in furthering their
education, including annual scholarships
for Vernonia High School graduates.
Last year’s tea party turned out
to be a lot of fun for everyone, including
P.E.O members.
The support and
participation was great and the proceeds
enabled us to help more women with
scholarships—that’s what P.E.O. is all
about: “Women helping women” meet
their goals. It couldn’t be done without
the generous support of the community.
So, ladies young and old: Bring
your grandmas, moms, daughters and
granddaughters to the “Second Annual”
P.E.O. Spring Tea. See you there!

On The Shelves
By Shannon Romtvedt
April is a month of celebration with Na-
tional Library Week (April 10 – 16), National Poetry
Month, and this year, Beverly Cleary’s 100 th birth-
day (April 12), famous children’s author born in
McMinnville, Oregon.
To celebrate National Poetry Month,
Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita Paulann Petersen
visited the library on Sunday, April 10. She led a
workshop, followed by a reading of a selection of
her poems. The workshop was attended by 13
people. Afterwards, participants read one of their
pieces. I sat in the back, amazed at what people
had written. We have very creative writers in Ver-
nonia. Thank you so much for coming and sharing.
Paulann says “Thank you for the wonderful day I
had in Vernonia.”
We had our first Homeschool Library Time
on Wednesday, April 13. 20 homeschool children
came to the library and did a scavenger hunt (in-
troducing how to use the library), made crafts, and
magnatile and lego creations. This will be a regular
program and also serves as an outreach to new
homeschoolers and homeschool parents in the
area. Our next homeschool time will be Wednes-
day, May 11, 1 – 2 pm.
Summer Reading is coming up and the li-
brary is looking for volunteers. Teens interested in
volunteering for community service credit or for a
senior project are more than welcome. We would
also love adult volunteers! We need volunteer help
for crafts, programs, and help at the desk with dvd
filing, shelving, and check out. We are also looking
for volunteers to run a story and craft program. If
interested in a volunteer opportunity, please pick
up an application at the library. For questions,
contact Shannon (503) 429-1818 or shannonr@
vernonia-or.gov.
