VHS Winter Sports Report
Boys Basketball -The Vernonia Loggers
earned a trip to the OSAA 2A Basketball
State Championship in Pendleton after
defeating the #15 Bonanza Antlers 65-
60 on Saturday, February 27 at Vernonia
High School.
The Loggers jumped out to
a quick lead to start the game with
sophomore Clay Sullivan trying to
set the tone by hitting two three point
shots. The Loggers used quick passing
to get inside and utilized their height
advantage, with seniors Robert Conner
and Arne Schiemann easily getting to the
hoop.
But Bonanza kept the game
close, using deadly outside shooting
and a tenacious defense that caused
numerous turnovers. The game was tied
49-49 at half time.

Conner going to the basket with authority
several times, including a breakaway
dunk that sealed the deal. Sullivan hit
four clutch free throws down the stretch
and a three point basket by Bonanza at
the buzzer made the final score appear a
bit closer than the game actually was.
The #2 seeded Loggers will play
#7 Burns at the Pendleton Convention
Center on Thursday, March 3 at 8:15
pm in the first round of the State
Championship. Burns finished second
in the Wapati League playoffs, losing
51-35 to #5 Imbler after going 11-1 in
league play. They have a 21-5 record
overall. They advanced to the final eight

Northwest League rival City Christian.
The Loggers won the Northwest
League title with an 84-78 win over
City Christian on Saturday, February
20. Following the game Loggers Clay
Sullivan and Brett Elliot were named
First Team All League, Robert Conner
was named Second Team, and Arne
Schiemann and Tristan Adams were
named Honorable Mention.

The Loggers gained the
advantage in the third quarter and
looked to be in control of the match
up, but everytime they looked to pull
away, Bonanza would hit another three
pointer and creep back into the game.
Head coach David Weller used a shorter
rotation and worked Francesco Mian
into the game, who had success in the
low post getting to the basket. Brett
Elliot grabbed several key rebounds and
Jared Medearis and Brett Jones provided
important minutes off the bench.
Sullivan left the game with a
bloody nose for several minutes early in
the fourth quarter and it wasn’t until he
