Readers Lend Their Voices...
To the Editor,
I know we are right in the
middle of winter and hoping for spring
to get here soon, but there is a group of
people in town that already are working
on summer. The Vernonia Friendship
Jamboree committee has been working
on this year’s 60 th Jamboree since the
last one ended. This letter is intended
to reach out to this fine community, in
search of energetic volunteers with ideas,
time, and resources to help put on the
best Jamboree possible. The Jamboree
takes the work of many people, lots of
hours, and plenty of energy to get things
done. This past year we have had a few
volunteers step down, due to family and
job commitments. Unfortunately for us,
these were some very involved members
who took on a huge workload over the
past few years. We currently have the
need for people to help with fundraising,
overseeing events, and soliciting
sponsorships.
So many people think that
Jamboree just happens each year, but
it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of
money. Just to give you all an idea of
what expenses the Jamboree has each
year, here are a few. Insurance, we pay
approx. $3,000 to insure every event
at Jamboree, and another $3,000 for
port-a-potties, and if we have the Kids
zone, well that can be anywhere from
$1,500 to $3,000 depending on what
we rent. A concert like we had last
year can cost anywhere from $2,000
and up. There has also been a desire to
have fireworks for the 60 th Jamboree,
and well, that costs approximately
$5,000, there is also advertising, t-shirts,
ribbons, and equipment (i.e. electrical
boxes etc.…). This doesn’t even count
what the Logging show spends to put
on that event. When it is all said and
done, Jamboree costs can be anywhere
from $15,000 to $20,000 for our three
day event. Now, we recoup some of
these costs through vendors, ticket
sales, admissions, and sponsorships, but
that doesn’t mean we make it all back.
Each of the past two years, we have had
gun raffles which have made us some
good money, but it also burned a lot of
people out. This is where you all come
in, we need help! We are trying to make
Jamboree a family event, that everyone
can enjoy, but it takes more than the few
people we have.
The Jamboree committee meets
currently each second Wednesday of
the month, 6:30 pm at the fire station. If
you have been looking for a way to get
involved in your community, then we
would welcome your participation. As
we get closer to Jamboree we will need

you, this can be hard work, and it can
often be frustrating, but when Jamboree
gets here and you see all the families,
friends and visitors having a great time,
