Philip R. Bentsen

J ay Coell Brasure was born
October 2, 2015 at 8:08 pm weighing
8 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 21
inches in length. Parents are Joseph
and Marylynn Brasure of Vernonia.
Grandparents are Daryl Tuttle and Elaina
Brasure of Vernonia and Manuel Alfaro
Serrano of Chicali, Mexico and Maria
Aquirre Maldonado of Portland, OR.
Philip R. Bentsen, 79, a previous
resident of the Vernonia community, late
of Portland, died Saturday morning,
December 5, 2015 at the West Hills
Health & Rehab Facility in Portland.
Services will be held at a later
date.
Philip Roger Bentsen was
born on December 20, 1935 in Sidney,
Montana, the son of the late Elvin
Lauritz and Gladys Rose (Rodenberg)
Bentsen. He was raised in the Sidney
community until 1947 when he
moved with his family to the Corvallis
community, where he was a graduate
with the Corvallis High School Class of
1954.

and has done well against some tough
competition. Freshman Tyler Wolf is
developing quickly. Barnes says Wolf
appears to be a real student of the sport

He was a Veteran of the Vietnam
conflict, having served one enlistment in
the United States Air Force. During his
service he was stationed at the Guam
Naval Station, in Que Mo and Matsu
Islands and in Denag, Laos. He was a
Senior Airman in the Air Policeman
“Warhawks” Unit. He was honorably
discharged at the rank of Major. Philip
then served in the United States Army
Reserves for four years.
Following his discharge, Philip
attended Oregon State University where
he majored in Agriculture and minored
in Liberal Arts. He was also a member of
the ROTC at OSU. He also attended the
University of Missoula where he studied
Criminal Sciences as well as attending
Montana State University.
He was united in marriage
to Judy M. Anderson on October
29, 1983 at the St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church in Toledo, Oregon. Following
their marriage they made their home in
Toledo until 1999 when they moved to
the Vernonia community.
Philip was preceded in death by
his wife Judy on August 26, 2005 after
celebrating over 21 years of marriage
together. Following Judy’s passing,
Philip resided in Vernonia until becoming
a guest resident at the West Hills Health
and improves every time he wrestles.
Nick “Brick” Bennett continues to
improve at 138 and should be a solid
part of the squad this season. Barnes
says Storm Hensen is hungry and also
continues to improve and is wrestling

a lot of heart after winning three of
her three matches in the girls bracket

He worked as a Regional
Security Manager for Vescom
Corporation until his retirement in 2009.
Philip was a member of the
VFW Post #4227 in Toledo, Oregon; the
American Legion Post #119 in Vernonia
and the US Prudential Task Force.
Among his special interests he
enjoyed Indian crafts, beadwork, art and
music, Native American horses, family
genealogy, camping, fishing, hunting
and traveling.
Philip is also preceded in death
by his parents, Elvin L. and Gladys R.
Bentsen.
Survivors include his daughter,
Rachael Bentsen, of Vernonia, Oregon;
his brother and sister-in-law, Lon and
Denise Bentsen, of Toledo, Oregon and
his niece and nephew, whom he helped
raise, Erica Bentsen and Aaron Bentsen.
The family suggests that
remembrances may be contributions to

competitions on the schedule coming
up with the Haggerty Invitational at
Nestucca on December 19, the Clatskanie
Tournament on December 29, the Bob
Bishop Invitational in Willamina on
January 2, and the Pac Rim Tournament
in Seaside on January 8-9.
