18 in other words december3 2015 Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising to Play Holiday Concert International Music & Entertainment Association’s (IMEA) 2015 Bluegrass Group of the Year, Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising will be returning to band leader Kathy Boyd’s hometown of Clatskanie, Oregon for a wonderful holiday concert on Friday, December 4, at 7:30 pm at the Birkenfeld Theatre located at 95 South Nehalem Street. Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising is all about the stories, and stories of everyday America are what you get from these four personable entertainers. Members include the 2008 RMA Bluegrass Songwriter of the Year, the 2010 City Love Music Songwriter of the Year, and a member whose songs have been compared to those written by Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen. In 2014 the group’s song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas (In the State of Oregon) won the IMEA Holiday Song of the Year - their album “Spending Every Christmas With You” was nominated as IMEA Holiday Album of the Year. The single “Spending Every Christmas With You” was chosen as one of Radio Airplays Top 20 new Christmas songs of 2013. Warm hearted, personable and fun, Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising are an ensemble who connect with the audience both on and off the stage. With multiple CDs receiving airplay around the world, this group has fans everywhere they go. The program will include holiday selections such as I’ll Be Home for Christmas, PACHELBEL CANON IN D, Bluegrass Christmas, as well as the premier of Scappoose Ridge and hometown favorite 12 More Miles to Clatskanie. “It is always such fun to return to the town where I have such dear memories from my childhood,” exclaims band leader Kathy Boyd. “My family still lives in the area but I’m usually in and out of town so quickly that I don’t have the opportunity to connect with all the people I stay in contact with through social media. I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to see them in person at the beautiful new performing arts theater – which use to be the movie theater where we paid a quarter to spend the afternoon when we were growing up!” Tickets are available at Hump’s Restaurant in Clatskanie, by calling Elsa at 503-728-3403 or at the ticket booth that opens 30 minutes before the performance. Adults = $18, Seniors 60+/Students = $16, Children 12 and under = $14. Cash or checks only please. Flowers n’ Fluff in Clatskanie will be offering free dessert to those who come by for dinner prior to the concert and show their ticket. Seating is limited so get your tickets while they are still available! Small Town, Big World: Detour Around the Food Coma By Britt Bensen Steele A little “detour” subject this month: As the holidays descend upon us, I love to include in my life the little tips I’ve learned from people from all around — around the corner, or around the globe. At the end of the day, we are all the same — whether we are from Bali, Bethlehem, or Burbank. Here are a few of my favorite tips (and a recipe) that help me avert the dreaded “food coma” that so often comes a calling this time of year: Bring Your Own Delish: Make a few healthy dishes and bring those with you or make sure they make the “gotta have” list — even if that means way too much food on the holiday dinner table. If you can fill your tummy with healthy stuff first (even if you have to bring it), then you’ll at least get the good stuff in and out of the way. Don’t know what to make? Email me at britt@BrittBSteele.com and I will send you some of my favorites (in a pretty little mini-book). Eat Before You Eat: I always eat before I go somewhere where the menu is unknown, and if it’s an overnight thing, I bring fruit and avocado (yes, I know avocado is, technically, a fruit too), and some homemade granola and low fat yogurt for sharing. If I can get that FIRST meal in that is healthy I am in a much better place than being starving when I sit down to feast. And then I bring nuts… (Keep reading!) Get a Little Nutty: Roast your own nuts and seeds and keep them handy — cashews are my favorite, but hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and almonds are all delicious freshly roasted on the stove top and added to a salad or eaten as a “mini meal” in about 1/3 cup max serving size with 4-6 oz of fresh squeezed juice by itself or even mixed with sparkling soda (the juice not the cashews). In fact, just this morning for breakfast, I had 6 oz. fresh squeeze orange juice and a handful of my own oven- roasted nuts (with sea salt). Dress it UP: I always make my own dressing — and most of the time it is the one I have given you — I have a few others, but the vinaigrette is the one I revert to through all the seasons. When you make your own dressing, you are sure to avoid transfats, low quality oils, and unnecessary fillers. Go Fast: If you can, each day, try observing 12 hours of not eating — if you can. Having 12 hours where you don’t eat or drink anything that is not clear (and you know the “right answer” if you are wondering if you can see through your wine). Giving your digestion a break, skipping that second dessert or that first breakfast, means your digestion can clean house and get you super ready for the next meal — and you will feel more alive, alert, clear and rested as a result. (Don’t just believe me, try it out and see for yourself!) Britt’s Vinaigrette Dressing (that everyone wants the recipe for) • 2/3 cup first cold pressed olive oil • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar • 1 T (plus or minus to taste) real maple syrup • 1 or 2 cloves garlic, minced • salt and pepper to taste This is my all time favorite salad dressing. Make it ahead of time and store it at room temperature for the garlic to infuse the dressing. (If you don’t eat garlic, you could add a variety of fresh herbs, i.e. tarragon, basil, or oregano would all be equally delicious.)
