schools september3 2015 VHS 2015 Fall Sports Preview Football - There is certainly a lot of excitement swirling around the Vernonia football program as the Loggers and new head coach Thor Ware get ready to kick off the 2015 season. Ware arrives with a history of running successful programs with a winning tradition, winning the state title in 2010 at 3A Rainier. He looks ready to try and establish the same tradition for the Loggers, who have suffered through several down years. The Loggers open the season at home on Friday, September 4, facing a strong 3A Warrenton team that beat Vernonia 53-0 last season. “This will be a good test for us,” said Ware. Not only did Ware bring a winning tradition when he came to Vernonia, he also brought along several key players to the team. Ware’s team is loaded at the skill positions, and his coaching prowess has helped develop several young and first time players into important contributors. The defense has been almost flawless in the preseason and the team will be fast, quick and athletic. The Loggers dominated the season opening Jamboree on Saturday, August 29, racking up yardage and points on all three teams they faced, including Knappa who was ranked third in the state in preseason, and the defense was unscored on in the tournament. “I think we surprised some people and we did real well,” said Caoch Ware about his team’s performance at the Jamboree. “We ran the ball well, threw the ball well, and had some good catches.” Ware’s son Steele Ware, a junior, will start at quarterback. Ware has a strong and accurate arm and looks like he will be a leader on the field. Seniors Alex West, Jake Harbour, Blade Ware (another of Coach Ware’s sons) and Robert Conner (a transfer student) will rotate at running back. This four Nelson at center, the line features first year player and senior Jared Medearis, and underclassmen Bailey Morrison, Jake Butcher, and Gavin Everett. The defense has consistently shut down the opposition in summer league play and again at the Jamboree. “They were aggressive and were swarming to the ball,” said Coach Ware. Nelson, Morrison and Medearis will play on the defensive line. Noah Rylands, West, Blade Ware, Steele Ware, Burns, and Harbour have played at linebacker. Elliot and Butcher look to start at the corners with Conner at free safety. Following their season opener against Warrenton, the Loggers travel to Gold Beach and Chemawa, before returning home on September 25 to face Culver. Williams’ varsity squad has good size and some returning leadership which should make them a favorite, along with Faith Bible, to challenge for the league title this year. The goal is to once again advance to the state tournament where the Lady Loggers hope to get past the first round. Seniors Paige Smith, Sarah Smith, Kassidy Fetch and McKenzie Titus give Williams a strong core group to work with and underclassmen Megan Ely, Peyton Wolf, Morgan Harral, and freshman Joyce Everrett help fill out the varsity squad. Fetch takes over as setter this season after being the back up last year. Williams says Fetch looks great so far and is working hard at helping keep the team together on the court.
