Spencer Park Grand Opening Celebration

The City of Vernonia celebrated the grand opening of
Spencer Park on Saturday, August 8, 2015.
The celebration included youth from the Vernonia
Soccer Club playing for the first time. Prior to the kids taking
the field, there were short speeches by County Commissioner
Tony Hyde, State Representative Brad Witt, State Senator Betsy
Johnson, and Vernonia Mayor Randy Parrow. Vernonia School
Superintendent Aaron Miller was also on hand for the ceremony.
Soccer players “cut” the ribbon by running through it and onto
the field.
Additionally, local softball players took the field for
the first time on Friday evening, August 7, and played the first
softball game at the new facility. Commissioner Hyde threw out
the first pitch.
The completion of the new sports fields is one of the
final recovery projects from the Flood of 2007. The Vernonia
School District constructed the fields on the site of the old school
buildings in exchange for the old Spencer Field property where
the new school campus was built, which was owned by the City
of Vernonia.
