VHS Spring Sports Report
Track and Field - The boys and girls
Logger teams both did well at the
Northwest League Championships, held
at Portland Christian on May 15-16.

The Vernonia boys finished 2 nd
to league champion Nestucca and the
girls team finished 3 rd . Both teams had
some excellent individual and relay
performances that qualified them for
the State Championship at legendary
Hayward Field in Eugene on May 21-22.

Meghan Sullivan won the girls
100, 200, 400 meters and anchored the
girls 4x400 relay to take home four gold
medals and was awarded the Female
Athlete of the Meet trophy.

Drew Cheney won league
championships in the high jump, triple
jump and anchored the league champion At the district meet Clay Sullivan won gold in the

200, 400 meters and 4x400 relay and was named
“Drew should have won the trophy for
Female Athlete of the Meet.
Male Athlete of the Meet,” said
coach Byron Brown.

Clay Sullivan, an
outstanding freshman, won the
110 high hurdles, qualified for
state with 2 nd in the long jump
and also ran on the champion
4x400 relay team.

Brett Jones qualified for
state in the high jump, taking
second place.

Justin Fletcher replaced
Nikita Moskolev, who pulled a
hamstring in warm ups, in the
4x400 relay. Also going to state
in the 4x400 are Dan Rice, Clay
Sullivan and Cheney.

Máca Veselkova won
the girls long jump and ran on
the 4x400 champion league
relay team.

The
girls
4x400,
including Veselkova, Cecile
Birkelund and Lisa Paje, just
destroyed the competition, expanding
the lead every leg of the relay with
Meghan Sullivan running the anchor
leg and leaving no doubt as to who the
champions would be.

“The whole team chipped in
with contributions that allowed us to
overachieve once again,” said coach
Brown. “Coach (Teresa) Williams
really got the most out of the field event
competitors and I really appreciate Todd
Sullivan’s volunteer work with the relay
teams.”

“I would really love to see a
level playing field where either we have
comparable practice facilities (a track)
or have our competitors practice with the
facilities we have,” added Brown.
Softball - The Lady Loggers appear to
have salvaged their season, winning the
final six games and finishing third in the
Northwest League with a 6-6 record.

Vernonia swept their series with
Neah-Kah-Nie by scores of 11-0, 10-0
and 20-0 before sweeping the series
against Delphian by scores of 22-1, 15-3
and 19-3.

The Lady Loggers were set to
play in the league playoffs on Wednesday,
May 20 at Pacific University.
Baseball - The young Logger team
struggled all season and finished in sixth
place with an 8-13 record in Northwest
League play.

After losing eight straight
games in the middle of the season, the
Loggers closed out the season on a high
note winning three of their final four
games. Vernonia defeated Neah-Kah-
Nie 4-3, and won two of three games
against Delphian, winning 10-5 and 7-0
and losing the middle game 9-5.
Equestrian Team - The state competition
was postponed until June 24-17.
City Department Updates
continued from page 5
• Staff received a quote from our IT consultant
for offsite back up of the City’s servers. Our
current backup system is onsite and while
it protects against server failure, it would not
eliminate the loss of data in the case of a fire.
• Public Works submitted a quote for a new
tractor. The Finance Director is currently
exploring financing options that would best
benefit the City. The cost would be shared
with several departments that would utilize the
tractor.
• The City has posted an ad for a Public Works
Utility Worker position. This is a full time
position and
once
filled,
there
will
be three full
time staff and
one 1/2 staff
dedicated to
Public Works.

Public Works
• Public Works continued with pumping of the
sewer lagoons to gain as much storage as
possible for the summer.
• Sewer pump station #2 generator needed
service again this week as it was found to have
a faulty fuel pump again.
• The Lake pump was turned on again as the
river is still flowing high enough.
• Staff installed two new water services. One on
5th Ave. and one on Clatsop St.
• Public Works assisted Parks staff with
installation of new fence at new Spencer Park.
Final completion will be after the temporary
fence is removed next month.
• Public Works Foreman met with ODFW at the
water plant to discuss a possible cost share
improvement to the intake screen. This project
would include the installation of an automatic
valve that would flush the intake screen when
leaves or debris begin clogging it.
