The Cabin in Vernonia:
A Great Place to Hold Your Next Event
Looking for a place to hold
a quaint wedding and reception in
the country? How about a business
meeting or some type of retreat?
Do you have a family reunion,
bridal shower, or surprise birthday
party you need to plan?
The Cabin in Vernonia is
the perfect place.
Formerly known as the
Scout Cabin, the facility is owned,
managed and maintained by the
Friends of the Scout Cabin. The
Cabin in Vernonia is a beautifully
restored log cabin nestled among
huge trees in Vernonia’s Hawkins
Park. The Cabin has a full kitchen,
river rock gas fireplace, wrap
around deck and tables and seating
for 100 people. Hawkins Park
features a log gazebo perfect for
taking your wedding vows.
The Cabin in Vernonia is
accompanied with a wonderful
story about it’s restoration. Built in
1928 and used by local Scout troops
for decades, the cabin was obtained
by the City of Vernonia when it
fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It
sat unused and was damaged in
1996 by a severe flood. A group
of local volunteers, spearheaded
by long time resident Shirley
Daughtry, organized the friends
group, developed a business plan,
fundraised, and rebuilt the cabin
over a three year period.
The end result is a
handsome
and
functional
community center that can host
youth activities, town meetings,
and other special events. The
Friends of the Scout Cabin rent it
out and continue to maintain the
venue with the proceeds.
The Friends of the Scout
Cabin recently added a webpage
for more visibility and an on-line
reservation system, making it
easier for you to book your event.
They hope to add a calendar in
the near future so you can check

availability as well.
Kathy Larsen is a new
volunteer with the Friends who has
organized the reservation system.
“People in our community don’t
realize that this facility is managed
and maintained mostly by a group
of people who are all now in their
eighties,” says Larsen. “They do
a wonderful job, but we need to
start finding the next generation
of volunteers to keep this facility
operating as a community
resource.”
Larsen points out that
youth activities and functions are
held free of charge at the facility
and fees for other events are very
reasonable.
