Council that an RFP for the Waste Water project
has been posted.
Plans to fence Spencer Park are
moving forward and staff was able to reduce
the proposed budget and find funding in the
Parks budget.
Mammone told Council he is still
researching the legal aspects of the sewer issue
brought to Council by Terry LaChappelle at
the last meeting. LaChappelle has experienced
sewage backups and has tried to repair the
issue. The blockage appears to be on an
adjacent property that has been abandoned by
the owner. Council instructed staff to reimburse
LaChappelle for his expenses, to resolve the
sewer blockage, and investigate how to charge
expenses to the property owner.
The City Administrator asked Council
whether they had concerns about two family
members serving on the same City Committee.
Council was told there was nothing in the city
ordinance prohibiting it and Council took no
action.
Staff asked Council how they would
like to handle temporary businesses on City
property. Council directed staff to prepare a
policy.
Council Hears Student Leadership Report-
Council heard an update on Vernonia High
School activities from Leadership students
Drew Cheney and Zi_xian Chen.
Track and Field - The Loggers are
getting ready for the most important
track and field meets of the season,
the district state-qualifying meet at
Portland Christian on May 15 and
16, and for the top 2 in league, the
state track meet at Hayward Field in
Eugene May 21 and 22.
“We have a lot of talent,
some veteran team leaders and we are
deeper in the field events than we have
ever been,” says Vernonia head coach
Byron Brown, “but Nestucca is the
favorite for the league championship.”
For the boys, freshman Clay
Sullivan is leading the league in the
high hurdles, is third in 100 meters,
second in long jump and anchors the
leagues best 4x100 relay team (with
Nikita Moskalev, Noah Rylands
and Dan Rice). Dan Rice, Drew
Cheney and Dylan Taylor are having
great senior seasons and are
team leaders. The boys 4x400
relay is also tops in the league
with Rice, Dominic Szlavich,
Cheney, Sullivan, and Jared
Medearis. “Having five good
400 runners really helps,” says
Brown. “These guys have been
destroying the competition pretty
much everywhere we go.” High
Quentin is a leader to his peers and a shining example of a
citizen that goes above and beyond. He participates in school
leadership, organizes fund raisers, and events. He also
represents our youth by serving on the City Parks Committee.
Quentin says," I like helping and
making a difference." Quentin,
also mentioned his endeavors in
Vernonia are small, and he would
like to move on to larger things
like Senator or President.
Quentin's aspirations and deeds
are to be commended.
