Highway 30 on Knife River Corpora-
tion Northwest land. The compressor
station is not subject to permitting re-
quirements.
In addition to traveling near
Vernonia, the route of the pipeline trav-
els directly over the Four County Point,
just off Highway 26 in the Tillamook
State Forest. This spot, where Colum-
bia, Clatsop, Tillamook and Washing-
ton Counties meet, is the only place
in Oregon where four counties touch.
Wayne Auble from the Tillamook State
Forest says the Forest Service has to
approve easements for utilities in their
jurisdiction if environmental permit re-
quirements are met and make route sug-
gestions, as well as work to assure the
best possible mitigation if state lands
are compromised during the construc-
tion process.
The route of the pipeline ap-
pears to stay north and east of Saddle
Mountain State Park and stays south of
Camp Wilkerson County Park.
Safety could be a concern for
anyone located near the pipeline. Wiki-
pedia provides a list of worldwide pipe-
line explosions dating back to 1962,
including four in the United States dur-
ing 2014. The most serious incident
occurred on July 30, 2004 at Ghisleng-
hien, Belgium, near Ath (50 kilometers
southwest of Brussels), which killed 24
people and left 122 wounded.
There would be a 100 foot tem-
porary (and sometimes more) construc-
tion easement and a fifty foot perma-
nent easement. Within the permanent
easement, no trees greater than 15 feet
in height are allowed. The pipeline will
be three to five feet deep in most loca-
tions, deeper under the horizontally
drilled stream crossings.
The OLNG website contains
a stakeholders list from 2008. No one
from Vernonia is included on this list,
even though it has stakeholders from
places like Banks and Gaston.
