Oregon Rural Electric Co-op
Association Recognizes Johnson
as “Cooperator of the Year”
At their December 4th annual
meeting in Salem, the Oregon Rural
Electric Cooperative Association
(ORECA) honored Senator Betsy
Johnson (D-Scappoose) with the
association’s “Cooperator of the Year”
award. The ORECA “Cooperator of
the Year” is the organization’s most
prestigious award given annually to
an elected official.
ORECA recognized Senator
Johnson for her bipartisan work in
the legislature to represent the rural
interest of her lower Columbia River
district. Sen. Johnson is “an outstanding
advocate for citizens in rural communities
by helping keep energy costs low and
decision making local,” said Ted Case,
ORECA Executive Director.

President of Vernonia-based West Oregon
Electric Co-op, presented the award.
“Senator Johnson knows the challenges

we face each day to provide affordable,
reliable power,” he said. “We have a
forceful voice in the legislature.”
ORECA represents Oregon’s 18
electric cooperative utilities that receive
emission-free hydroelectric resources
marketed by the Bonneville Power
Administration. These co-ops serve in
30 of Oregon’s 36 counties and provide
electricity to over 200,000 customers in
rural and remote areas in Oregon.
2015 First Day Hike
The Hike
An easy to moderate 3-mile,
Ranger-led trek for hikers. Great
for all ages with opportunities to
loop back ealry, if participants are
interested in a shorter hike. This
natural surface trail winds
through Douglas-fir forests with
wonderful views of the Oregon
Coast Range. Be prepared with
hiking boots, weather appropriate
clothing, a water bottle, and a trail
snack. Rain or shine.
America’s State Parks First Day Hikes launched in all 50 states on January 1st, 2012 with Stub
Stewart State Park being a founding partner. Take part in the third year of this national event which
is one of hundreds of hikes across the nation. Can't make this one? Go to the Discovery Depot at
the Welcome Center to get the self-guided version. A secret phrase at the culminating view can be
passed on afterwards for a nice memento, while they last!
