Sentry is Now R&S Market
almost thirty-five years and met when
Randy was dating Sharon’s sister. “I
told her he would be a good catch, but
she didn’t keep him!” laughs Sharon.
Sharon started working at the market
in 1979. Both Randy and Sharon
have worked off and on at the market
over the years, in fact Randy says he
has worked for Gordon Smith five
different times during his lifetime. At
one time Parrow worked in Garibaldi
at a different market for Smith. The
Parrows came back to Vernonia to stay
in 1992.
Over the years the Parrows
have seen many changes in the
market business. The biggest change
according to Randy: going from no
UPC codes to fully functional scanning
systems. “We used to hand mark each
item individually with a price tag when

the freight came in,” says Parrow.
“One nice thing about the old
days, with the old, class five NCR
registers with the hand crank, was that
if the electricity went out they still
worked,” says Parrow with a laugh.
One of the big benefits for the
community in having R&S Market
here in town is that it provides local
employment. “We hire locally and
provide jobs,” says Sharon. “They
live here and pay taxes here.” “Our
customers who shop here help support
over twenty different families in this
community,” added Randy.
One of the challenges for the
Parrows today, operating in the grocery
business in a rural area, is competing
with large retailers like Costco,
Walmart and Target. “Our prices are
high, we know that,” says Parrow. “We

can’t compete with Costco or Winco.”
“However, we can compete with
Safeway and Thriftway and in some
cases with Fred Meyer,” adds Sharon.
As far as future changes, Randy
says, because of the way people receive
their media, he foresees a day when the
store will do something different in the
video department space.
Tourism has also had an impact
on business at the local grocery store.
The Parrows say customers driving
the ten miles from Stub Stewart State
Park as well as other summer weekend
visitors have really boosted sales.
In the end, R&S Market is here
to meet the needs of their customers.
“One of the reasons that I think Gordon
and Chuck survived here for so long
is that they didn’t chase fads,” says
Parrow. “They just stuck with being a
basic grocery store.”
