James
Samantha Lee, a 2009 graduate
of Vernonia High School has received
her degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Washington.
She has completed internships at Solar
World in Hillsboro and for the Federal
Government in Virginia. She currently
is working in Virginia as a civilian for
the Army.
Samantha’s group senior project
was accepted by NASA. The group
traveled to the Johnson Space Center
in Houston where they conducted a
microgravity experiment in zero gravity.
The team performed the experiment
aboard a microgravity aircraft which
produced periods of weightlessness for
up to 25 seconds at a time by executing a
series of approximately 30 roller coaster-
like parabolas over the Gulf of Mexico.
During the free falls, the students
gathered data in the unique environment
that mimics space. The result is 15-25
seconds of zero gravity just like you
would experience on the International
Joyce Margaret
Fabre Williams James of
Vernonia passed away
in her sleep Monday,
July 28, 2014. She is
survived by one son Robert
Dewey Williams Jr., his
wife Sheryl, one grandson
Robert Ray Williams
and his wife Jenny, one

Sky Elizabeth Williams
and one great-grandson
Lucas Stone Williams all of Vernonia,
two sisters, Kitty Zagaryuka of
Oklahoma City, OK and Imie McGinnis
of Mobile, AL. She was proceeded in
death by her son Bruce Marvin Williams
in October of last year.
Joyce was born in Mobile, AL
September 30, 1929 the 9th daughter
of Frank Sylvester Fabre and Pearl
Margaret (Carrio) Fabre. She was
married in Mobile to Robert Dewey
Williams Sr, on September 4, 1949 and
they had two sons Dewey and Bruce.
Bob passed away in 1987 and
Joyce remarried in St. Elmo, AL to
Hubert James, Sr. on October 13, 1990.
They made their home in Star, MS and
when Hubert passed away in 1995 she
returned to Alabama and the home she
had helped build with Bob.
After having lived 76 years in
the deep south she moved along with her
son Bruce to Vernonia in 2005. Joyce
really enjoyed the changing of the
seasons here.
Joyce became an LPN in
1960 and worked most
of her nursing career
as a private duty nurse.
She not only nursed for
a living but continued to
help wherever there was a
need both with family and
friends up until her death.
Joyce was an avid
student of the bible; knew
the bible well and loved
to share God’s love with
everyone she met. Joyce
was a long time member
of the Seventh Day Adventist Church
and over the years she had served as
teacher (children and adult), pathfinder
leader, community services, head
deaconess and at the time of her death
was serving as an Elder in the Vernonia
Seventh Day Adventist Church. She
was a passionate Christian who loved
God and loved to give Bible studies and
visit and help the sick.
She was an accomplished
seamstress and a fabulous cook. She
loved gardening, not only vegetables but
flowers as well and she loved feeding
the birds.
Joyce was always involved in
whatever community she lived in and
when she moved to Vernonia she soon
began volunteering at Vernonia Cares
Food Bank and was so happy to have
the time to do so. She was serving on
their Board of Directors at the time of
her passing.
A celebration of life will be
held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 4:00
PM in the Commons area of Vernonia
School.
In lieu of flowers the family
requests donations be made to the
Seventh Day Adventist Building Fund.
Send to: SDA Church Building Fund,
PO Box 68, Vernonia, OR 97064.
